Words can't describe the wonderful smells and tastes of the dinner. We were there to enjoy. Surely we shall come again. My wife received a recipe for some great soup. We now enjoy it too at home.

We enjoyed our dinner at Anat's home very much, and we learned a lot about jewish tradition. The food was absolute marvelous and we are looking forward to receive the recipes from Anat, so we can try to bring a little of Israeli tradition to our home.

Its not often you get to visit someones home and gate crash their family dinner, exposing you to recipes, strangers and traditions you would not normally see. Curious about the tradition of Shabbat Dinner and having come from a long line of family that is wedded to their Sunday lunch I was curious to understand the similarities and differences between the two (faith aside).
A quick google of 'What to expect at a Shabbat dinner' left me somewhat informed but each home and family is different so it was just a rough guide. For the avoidance of doubt, do dress up, taking a gift is optional and if you get lost Anat or a family member will answer their phone.
On shabbat their is no public transport so your options are to cycle, take a Gett or a shared taxi to their home. Anat can also arrange a taxi for you but our taxi back this cost 3 times the Gett fare so I would stick to the Gett option if you can.
Once there, follow the open the doors across the foyer and up to the first floor, knock loudly (over the hubbub of guests and preparation) and you will be given a very warm welcome and a drink. From there food, wine, conversation and hospitality are flowing non stop.
Expect a wide range of people to attend (on our night Chinese, Austrian, German, Australian and UK, Jewish and non Jewish) plus some of Anat's family and friends. The meal does start with a prayer and mid courses we all got to introduce ourselves. There was also a balcony where the smokers in the group were allowed to pop out and light up during the evening.
Anat and her family were perfect hosts happy to discuss the food, their lives, their faith and a wide variety of topics raised by guests.
The experience can also be booked as a private dinner and would be a great way for visiting Jewish families to host their local family or friends on a Friday night than the hotel buffet style alternative.
The food was really good and if you take a fancy to a specific dish you could always come back for cookery classes that Anat also runs.
This experience really challenged my approach to restaurant eating and I would highly recommend not only this specific experience but also Eat With as a whole.

Anat and her family were amazing hosts. The food was great and we felt like part of the family. It was great getting to know locals from all backgrounds and learning about Israeli family life. I can’t recommend this enough.
