You must go!! Amazing tour and history, Our guide, Pastor Derrick was entertaining and informative. PLEASE park in their lot anytime in the area, they do so much with the funds from parking and tour. This church property was bought and paid for by congregants who literally sold their freedom for this undertaking.

Excellent experience that was rich with history of the formation and various time periods of church leadership. Derrick gave wonderful insight into the challenges and successes of the leadership of the church and its congregation as they thrived despite external influences and internal conflicts. The tour also enlightened participants about the inner workings of the Underground Railroad, architectural significance of the church, and resiliency of the faith which produced such a rich and unique history of people working together to leave such a rich legacy. This legacy was created in hope of a building a bridge of hope for others by slaves. Some of whom even had to reenlist themselves into indentured slavery to accomplish this vision.
The church was more than just a religious structure but instead was crucial in governing, protection of the community, and providing finance for social economic prosperity for its congregation. I highly recommend this tour for all!

We had an excellent experience here. Derrick, associate pastor, gave a wonderful history lesson to our group about how this church was built by enslaved people who also amazingly came up with the money for the materials. Derrick was also a lot of fun - this was a great group. We learned a LOT about lives of enslaved people, the churches where they were allowed to attend and worship, the bible they learned from, their circumstances of their lives. I probably learned more about slavery here than any other location in Savannah, and we actively sought that out, also going to the King-Tisdale Cottage (also very informative). We saw the holes in the floor in the lower level and learned the truth about their purpose. This was a great group experience to be a part of. We were there about and hour and a half. Derrick responded to all our questions also, which adds to the "tour."

Very informative and interesting place to learn about the role of the Black church in developing the city of Savannah, from the bricks in historic homes to the recipes served at the restaurants today. I was amazed to learn that this congregation is 250 years old and is still worshipping every Sunday!

We had the pleasure of visiting the church last week. It was an awesome experience, because each time I learn more and more. The history of this church is amazing! The tour guide is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. We met the pastor of the church while walking through town. He was so kind and personable. If you're visiting Savannah take the time to tour, or worship at the First African Baptist Church. You'll be enlightened!

Visited this church, for lots of reasons. Been there for long long time, known as a central part of the Underground Railway, home of worship those who have a completely different life experience than do I. Was blessed by the experience…reminded that persecution absolutely exists in this day, yet being God’s children, serving Him is still the purpose. Worth the time and effort, definitely different tour than many, but that was what I wanted.

My sister and I visited the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA in September 2023 and seeing this church was at the top of my list. The history of this church is amazing. But the tour guide, Josef, was horrible. He attempted to intimidate us, shared only minimal details about the church's history, and spent the final 30 minutes of the tour attempting to sell us a pamphlet he authored. Despite seeing some amazing things in the church, Josef spoiled our experience. The tour lasted almost 2 hours and Josef literally spent only 10 minutes of it sharing the history of the church and the remainder of time, he held our tour group hostage with stories about himself, complaining about being forced to come to lead the tour on a day he wanted to be fishing, and attempting to tease and ridicule members of group. The teasing bordered on bullying, leaving me feeling very uncomfortable and afraid of getting up to leave for fear of being angrily called out. Josef baited group members, hoping we'd say something wrong or stupid so that he could make fun of us for another 10 minutes. We paid for this tour, only to learn about how financially well-off he and his wife are, learn about their jobs and their very large home, and hear about his supposed importance in the church despite his Catholic beliefs. He insisted on everyone finding a folding chair in the basement to sit on before he would continue speaking, even though there were not enough chairs and some people preferred to stand, and this extended the time we remained held hostage. At one point, Josef shouted something about the pastor, using the pastor’s name. He then repeated what he shouted, pausing until the pastor rushed out of his office to wave at Josef, as if Josef was demanding attention from the pastor before he would continue the tour. I still have questions about the church’s history that could’ve easily been answered that day. I would love to visit the church again but only if there is a different tour guide.

Great tour to hear and learn about the history of the the first black church bought and built by slaves. There is just so much history and to know how they were able to accomplish such a great fete and that it still stands today, is simply amazing. APTTMH

On the last day of September 2023 we took the tour. The associate pastor gave the tour and he was great! We learned so much about the church in a very short time. The next day Sunday Oct. 1st we went there for the church service. We really enjoyed it. Even though we didn't have so called "church clothes" as we were enjoying a casual stay in Savannah they welcomed us with open arms. If you get the chance to take the tour and to visit on a Sunday I would encourage you to do both. You won't regret it. They seem to be a congregation that loves one another and reaching out to help those in need. Savannah is blessed to have them. Doing God's work is always a blessing. Thanks for letting us join you.

Disappointed in the tour. While the church itself is historical I found the tour guide very abrasive. I expected to hear facts about the church history, growth and congregation from beginning to present in a factual presentation. For the most part he did deliver this information, but in so doing used the audience in an attempt to interject some caustic humor. I found this attempt to be very sarcastic, condescending, inappropriate and degrading. At times we even felt uncomfortable as I felt he directed some accusatory comments regarding slavery at those on the tour who were not African American. At the end of the tour he selected a handful of people, proceeded to ask bible questions, pressured them with time constraints, then poked fun at them for not knowing!
I expected the church minister/preacher/elder to conduct the tour, as did the rest of our group. While we were told the "minister" would address us at the end....all he did was step out of his closed door office and wave from afar, then quickly disappeared back into his office, quickly closing the door again. Left me feeling like it was an inconvenience for him to make any sort of appearance.

Is the tour one where they talk about how they operated the underground railroad? the names of people involved? I love history and the underground railroad is amazing and i love hearing about stories from it.

Yes, they explain how the church and railroad was built, its destinations, etc. jAlso, how the church played a big part in the railroad. There is also a book you can purchase "The Indigo Journey - A Pictorial Journey of Slavery in Savannah" which is fascinating. If you love history, you will love this tour.

Are you able to visit this church without taking the tour? Our time it limited so I don't think we have time for the full tour, but would like to wander around the church for a few minutes.

Yes, church services are open to the public. But that said, if you don’t take the tour and learn from the guides, you are missing out on something powerful and extraordinary.

Is there a formal tour offered at this church? I couldn't find anything on their website about it. Do we just walk in the front doors and is a guide there?
