Had a superb tour of the garden and house. Hearing how the garden had been originally planted and developed ,fantastic views across the fens the families history and the beautiful decor inside the house, including a beautiful afternoon tea made this an excellent afternoon.

My son had his wedding here yesterday. The house and garden are a beautiful setting. Grace Vane Percy assisted with all the arrangements and was therw on the day to ensure everything went well. You can bring games such as croquet to play on the lawn. The finale was for the couple to leave by boat - driven by Christopher Vane Percy - to the Old Bridge hotel where they stayed for their wedding night.

We used The Island (part of Island Hall Godmanchester t/a CVP Designs) as our wedding venue in July 2022. Below is a summary of the good and the not so good. The venue cost £4,555 to rent including toilets and security.
The Good:
- The wedding venue is beautiful – A meandering river with gentle waters hugging a picturesque mature garden, with a lovely mixture of plants, hedges, and trees. The bridge over the river is unusually picturesque, and a marquee sits elegantly in the central green. The concourse makes a perfect green corridor for a ceremony, looking out on to the weir pool waterlilies. We were blessed with sunshine which made the experience absolutely gorgeous.
- As the venue is a ‘blank slate’, we were able to choose elements such as the marquee, lights & furniture (at a cost of £4995), as well as decorations which we created ourselves. It added to the unique feel of the venue.
- No corkage meant we were able to run our own bar and offer a better selection of drinks at a lower cost, facilitating a completely free bar all night.
- Grace Vane Percy (the daughter) was helpful, informative, pragmatic and flexible when required. She helped with some useful advice and nudges in the right direction when required, and was always a delight to interact with – a real credit to the venue.
- We booked the venue just after the first Covid lockdown in 2020 for July 2021. They were kind enough to move the date to 2022 with only a small admin cost (£200).
- The petal pole marquee – from Fairytale Marquees – was lovely.
The Less Good
- We found Christopher Vane Percy (the father) challenging to work with. Whilst ostensibly mild mannered and softly spoken, he seemed to insinuate that this was his garden rather than our wedding venue.
- The venue has strict sound level limits (due to their license). They install sound limiting equipment that cuts off the sound if it breaches these limits. However, when our professional wedding band (Penthouse 5 – who were excellent) started playing
– having previously sound-checked – Christopher decided that even though his equipment clearly showed the sound was below the required level, we needed to turn it down to a level his ear was happy with. I was shocked by how aggressively he spoke to me and the other groomsmen, threatening to cut off the electricity to the wedding completely if we didn’t bend to his demands. We had no choice but to agree or risk ruining the wedding with an incident. In the end, the drummer was struggling to play quietly enough, the singer was barely audible at times, and it really threw the band off their stride (although they reacted brilliantly). It’s been years since I’ve been spoken to like that – and it wasn’t something I was expecting at my own wedding. Shocking customer service at best, breach of contract at worst.
- Overall, the interactions with staff excluding Grace (who, again, was excellent) were poor, grumpy exchanges. In short, we weren’t made to feel welcome.
- The toilets were good quality, more than sufficient for the numbers present. The water ran out at about 22:00, which Christopher later suggested was because someone had jammed the tap open with a paper towel. I’m not sure how this would be possible to be honest, and it certainly didn’t look like that when I checked them at 22:30 having noticed the water had run out. It’s worth getting an usher to check the loos from time to time.
- Our ceremony was interrupted by their dog who walked over the bridge and appeared during a reading. The reading was ‘Love is like owning a dog’ so it was a lovely serendipitous moment. The dog then did a poo next to the ceremony but luckily out of sight of most of the audience. If you’re renting out your garden for four and a half grand, maybe keep your dog in the house?
- The security guard was there to monitor the gate, but also to keep an eye on us. He meddled with the bar, asking them to close earlier than planned and move the drinks in to an area they weren’t supposed to be. Everyone makes mistakes, and I wouldn’t be writing this if he had been in any way apologetic, but that was not the tone of the conversation. Having a security guard basically tell us to stop serving drinks early at our wedding is a window in to the priorities of the venue.
- Overall, I would happily recommend The Island Wedding Venue. The location is simply beautiful, especially on a sunny day like we had. The day was fantastic, the bride was happy (this is the most important thing!), and the guests enjoyed the day. Just brace yourself as Christopher Vane Percy may berate you for walking on the wrong bit of grass, turning the music too loud for his taste, or otherwise interfering with his beautiful garden.

The 'Invitation to View' tour was excellent value for money. Our host Christopher Vane Percy was extremely passionate about his restoration of this perfect mid-eighteenth century house and its beautiful grounds, in the centre of Godmanchester. After his enthusiastic tour, we were treated to a delicious afternoon tea, served by Christopher's daughter. An all round lovely day out.

Spent an idyllic early autumn afternoon visiting Island Hall. Christopher Vane Percy was a genial and informative host, putting his family connections into local and international context. Highly recommended tour booked through the Historic Houses Association.

We visit Godmanchester frequently from Cambridge and were delighted to see that Island Hall gardens were to be open on 26 May. We put the date in our diary and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. The grounds are beautiful and there was tea and cake too. Also a very good plant stall, all making for a day to remember. We will be back next year.

We recently attended a family wedding which was held here, although we had seen photos online prior to the wedding, in reality this venue is very charming and so picturesque. We were so lucky to be able to be outside, the weather broke into perfect sunshine at the right moment, we enjoyed canapes in the beautiful gardens, before making our way over the bridge to the marquee where the wedding reception was held. The reception was beautiful and when it was time to leave we left through a twinkling path of lights, so romantic. Lovely venue in a lovely village.
