The Red Rocks centre is a mix of an art galerie, a camp site, restaurant and hotel, and a community centre. Tourists are welcome here to buy art or even to make art themselves in an enjoyable “live painting” experience led by an artist. Worthwhile to visit.

Winnie spotted us at the shops below and asked us to please come up to see the Red Rocks Arts Center. I spotted a painting that I liked and told her that I planned to come back the next day if I decided I wanted to buy it. She said thank you and was not pushy. She was not at the center the next day when we returned, but did tell Kenny that we may stop by. Kenny was extremely nice and knowledgable and after we agreed to a price on the painting, he told us the history of the center as he removed the painting from the frame and carefully wrapped it for us to take with us. I would HIGHLY recommend Red Rocks Art Center as they have quality art and work hard to help the community. They are professional and we enjoyed meeting them.

The owner of the center sells himself as someone who helps children, as he teaches them art etc, and splits the profits. However, when we were at the center, we realized that all of the kids were boys, with zero girls. While it could have been just the day of our visit, we asked the owner about the gender ratio of kids at the center out of curiosity. He answered 25% girls, and told us that girls are 'lazier' and only have 50% of the concentration and focus boys have, which is why he does not like accepting girls at the center. He then proceeded to say 'you were once a girl, you should know'.

We were truly disappointed by this experience given that girls should be given more opportunity for income generation in a developing country like Rwanda. But at an establishment that is run by someone who does not believe in girls because they are 'lazier' in his opinion, we see little hope in closing the large gender income gap that exists in the country.

We believe there are other establishments in the Kinigi area that truly support girls and women, but this one is not it.

Awesome stop that was well worth it! This art centre helps to support the local community and we stopped by when the schools were on holiday and the children were there painting the wares you can buy. The teacher was a wonderful person and had some of his own art work for sale as well! The shops below were great but this was a wonderful stop to enhance the whole experience well worth a visit and a purchase of some local art!

Interesting art shop up on a hill above the main tourist trinket market in Virunga. I went here last after scouting the shops below, but should have stopped here first. The owner is very friendly and explained how he sources art from the community to help locals generate new income streams. Unlike the other shops, he didn't hover around me and pressure me to buy more and more. When I mentioned some specific items I was looking for that he didn't have, he asked around the other shops to find it. A+ customer service

I absolutely LOVE this art's center! This is a wonderful complex that helps employ locals and strengthen the Rwandan crafts tradition. LOVELY paintings, baskets, jewelry, sculptures etc at fair prices that support local artisans.

I loved meeting Red Rock's manager Kenny-himself a talented painter.

Come to this center for gifts or to take a class in anything from basket weaving to drumming. Can't wait to go back!

This Arts Center is part of a well designed complex of small art makers and retailers, located close to gorilla tracking sites. The Red Rocks Art Centre is a community tourism business delivering an ethical and accountable approach to making and distributing locally made art. There is a diverse offer of paintings, sculptures, clothing and jewellery. A highlight is the Center Manager, Kenny, who knows every piece and its artist, so you end up learning more about them than your average government run gallery! An artist himself, Kenny is really keen to hear what people want and immediately start making it right there and then. We left him starting work on a new outdoor gorilla sculpture made from volcanic rock, to be hollowed our so a candle could be lit inside. Great demonstration of being connected to the market, and innovating.
