If you love history and archeology, off of the beaten path, you will love Tak Alik Ab'aj (pronounced: talk a leek aba). Getting to the ruins does take travel, depending on where your coming from, but within the region there are many things to see and do. The ruins themselves are still being excavated. The site dates back to the Olemecs (1500BCE) period, before the Mayan time period. New finds Tak Alik Ab 'aj were published in the 2015 American and Spanish National Geographic magazine. Its a beautiful park, well maintained with many stelas. They also have a small zoo in the center of the park. Its advisable to know some spanish as the tour guides only speak spanish. Well worth the trip, it hasn't been ruined by thousands of tourists.

Visited on 18 February 2015. 50 Q to enter per person. Guide provided but they speak only Spanish and you are expected to tip as they receive no wages. As we all spoke some Spanish this was not an issue and our guide; Bernardo, was a wonderful guy. Well informed and funny.
The site is located over a series of five ascending terraces. You will enter at terrace three. Nice setting in the Guatemalan jungle. This is an active dig so you will see a lot of excavation and cleaning going on as you tour.
Takalik is still a religious center for the local Mayans. We encountered a few Shamans making offerings on the ancient altars sprinkled around the site. There are no animal sacrifices. If you want to see that go to Nepal.
Much better than I expected. I came away with a better appreciation for the Mayans and their culture. I would definitely come back as I understand that they are building a museum to house their finds.

These were our first ruins to visit in central america, so I cannot compare them to Tikal or Copan, but I really liked them. Would have not been worth 40-50 dollars each to us, with are the costs when you do the trip with a touroperator, but that's also because we're on a budget. If you speak basic spanish (you have to understnd the guide, otherwise all you see is just ome rocks), you can do the trip yourself!
In Retalhuleu we took at tuk-tuk (costs 5Q in total) to the place where the shared taxi's to El Asintal leave (I believe it's called la colonia). Took us about 2-5 minutes to get there.
The shared taxi was full and just left when we arrived but inmediately afterwards at that spot arrived the bus to el asintal, which brought us there in about 30min (costs 3,5Q each).
From El Asintal we got a cab to the site (4km drive, about 15 min), for which we paid 20Q. We arranged that he would pick us up 2 hours later, but he didn't return and therefore we started walking and hitched a ride back to El Asintal.
The entrance fee of the park is 50Q per person, and you should tip your guide. We had a guide who did not rush us and spoke slowly, so we could understand better (our spanish is very very basic). We walked around for about an hour and tipped the guy 20Q, but he did not seem very pleased with the amount. But you should give an amount that you're comfortable with.
All in all, a nice place to spend an hour of two. Especially if you speak spanish and can conversate with the guide!

Takalik Abaj is relatively unknown , to far away from the beaten track in Guatemala . Easily accesible is maybe a little bit too much but with a little planning from Quetzaltenango (also known as Xela ) a full day excursion away . When you arrive at the site - get a local tour operator involved in Xela , makes your life easier - the friendly guards will go with you , no english spoken but definitly a good course of spanish . So you get two for one . Ask to see the many statues others never got to see , behind the small museum under a thatched roof . Enjoy as well the nature .... completely diferent than the cold Quetzaltenango.
