If you are a good hiker and can hike many miles, it is worth it to go all this way. You can take ther ferry from Jenny Lake to Cascade Canyon and then past Hidden Falls to Lake Solitude and back. Then catch the boat shuttle back to Jenny Lake. A very long day.

Hiked Lake Solitude via String Lake parking lot and Cascade Canyon in mid-June. 17.5 miles, 4 miles in the snow. Once you are in Cascade Canyon it is relatively flat and easy and just about anyone would enjoy that part of the hike up to the junction and back. The second canyon was really tough in the snow. We were the second couple to arrive at the lake that day, and around 8 more arrived while we were taking in the views. The lake was frozen solid, but it’s still beyond beautiful back in that part of the canyon. I would say June is a sketchy time to hike to the lake unless you have crampons and two poles, there are some unsafe areas that we had to negotiate very carefully. We skipped the boat because we thought the ride across would be freezing cold. Parking at String Lake added a couple miles, but they were all downhill at the end when it mattered.

We started with the Boat shuttle across Jenny Lake. This will save you 5 miles of hiking. In the first mile you pass Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point both great stops. After Inspiration Point the trail follows Cascade Creek and gradually climbs for 3 miles to the trail junction. From here the trail climbs up to Lake Solitude over 2.7 miles. Lake Solitude is beautiful. This trail is very scenic but it is a long hike of 14.2 miles taking at least 7 hours minimum. Take plenty of water as in sunny weather it can get very warm. It is well worth the effort as the views of the Tetons are stunning.

Beautiful hike but be sure to take the boat across Jenny Lake. We didn't, as we thought it would be an easy hike along a lake. Wrong. It is up/down. That produced unneeded fatigue that caused a harder hike than desired/needed. However, it is beautiful and full of animals. Scenic views of the backside of the Grand Teton.

Lake Solitude lived up to its name on our hike. Departing early, we missed many of the crowds in the park, other than overnight campers near the lake. We took the Cascade Canyon route and the views were amazing. Saw mule deer, marmots, and pikas but no bears. The lake, still frozen over in early July, was surrounded by snow. This was a premier Teton hike.

trip JennyLake-Cascade canyon-Solitude Lake-Paintbrush Divide-String lake-Jenny Lake 35km. We started at 8am, a boat have taken us across a lake and than we have started a trail Cascade canyon etc. It is still uphill. On Paintbrush divide has been very windy. A way downhill has been also slow because we were tired and still on alert because of care about bears. At the end we have met one. But he/she was calm and fed on berries.

Our hike, to Lake Solitude, started on the Jenny Lake Shuttle. This is a boat that carries about 25 people from the Jenny Lake Vistors Center to the beginning of Cascade Canyon Trailhead. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the canyon. The shuttle boat continues it's trips from the visitor center to the canyon, and then back again, for the entire day. The last shuttle returns to the visitor center is at 7:00 PM. An adult, one way trip, will cost you $9.00 (there's no Senior rate for one-way.) If you purchase a round trip and you are a Senior the cost is $12.00. Arriving at the Visitor's Center early is helpful for auto or RV parking. This year, (2018), there is a construction project, as well.

The trail up Cascade Canyon starts out steep, in a heavily forested area. After the initial 500 ft. of elevation, the trail levels out and you will walk through some beautiful meadows, with Cascade Creek flowing through. Wild flowers are visible on each side of the trail. There is also an area where Moose frequent. We did see a mother moose and a recently born juvenile. Several sections of the trail are strun with rocks and boulders, so a good pair of hiking boots are valuable.

The water of Cascade is crystal clear, very inviting but very cold, too. at about 4.5 miles you will come to a fork in the Cascade Canyon Trail. To reach Lake Solitude, the walker should proceed right, up the North Cascade Canyon. The North Cascade Creek is also very impressive, with several bridges crossing back and forth over its waters. The hiker then comes to a more open area, with fewer trees and a more rocky path. The path also climbs more steeply in this area. There are also several designated wilderness camping sites, in this area. As you climb higher and higher there are some excellent views to be had of three prominent peeks, (including Grand Teton), and the canyon below. Beautiful flowers, along and rivulets and little streams are in many areas! We took a lunch with us and stopped along this path to eat. There are a number of good spots to rest and eat. Adequate water is important, I would take a minimum of three 17 oz. bottles of water. It's important to stay hydrated, including on the return trip down.

Lake Solitude was very pristine, and there are large rocks you can sit on while viewing this beautiful lake. Breathe in deep and enjoy the surroundings! The elevation at the lake is 9035 ft., according to a posted sign. You will climb over 2,000 ft. in elevation on this hike. It's nice to have a boat shuttle ride back after the 14+ miles for this round trip!

Highly recommended!

Took the ferry across Jenny Lake and by the time we were done we were VERY glad we did. This is a LONG hike 15+ miles with about 3000 ft elevation gain, and goes up to 9000ft elevation so oxygen is not as plentiful!

If you are in decent shape do this hike. As beautiful as Cascade Canyon is (and it IS beautiful) easily the better views are along the North Fork ascending to Lake Solitude. End of July and there was almost no snow at all, only one very small area near the top. Lake was all water too. LOTS of mosquitoes around the lake but that was the only place we ran into them.

You will be exhausted but exhilarated!

Even shaving miles off the route by taking the boat across Jenny lake, this is a long hike that features a lot of elevation gain. Be in shape or take your time. Most of the hike from Cascade Canyon is uphill and a tough slog. There was still some snow on July 14, but you don't need poles. The Lake itself was still pretty much frozen. You will feel accomplished at the end. Go for it.

6/16/18. This is an awesome trail with abundant wildlife and vistas. My wife and I started on a rainy morning using the boat to cross Jenny Lake to the trail head. The trail starts up a steady incline on a highly trafficked path through the forrest. Then transitioned to an wooded and wildflower covered valley which followed the river up to the the trail junction. We stopped along the way to remove our rain gear and take several pictures. Along the way we encountered a cow moose moose and her calf, several marmots, an elk and several species of birds. It took us an hour and a half to reach the junction where we ate lunch.

If you are into a little more hiking, I encourage you to continue on to at least the first foot bridge. The view of the mountains is spectacular, combined with the river and the wildflowers it is perfect and compares to hikes in Glacier National Park. At the second footbridge we encountered more patchy snow. As we continued up the trail the snow increased and the trail disappeared. The overall direction of the trail is obvious as you are heading up a valley with a river to one side and steep mountains to either side. However, finding the exact trail took a little work.

If you elect to continue up to Solitude Lake in the next few weeks, take caution, and your time. I suggest good boots, and poles. The snow is from several inches to several feet. Before you start download the AllTrails map and or have GPS. We had both. We found this to be helpful to stay on the trail as we found maybe a dozen tracks in the snow leading in several directions. Note, we found the markings in the trees to be sparse. Because of the snow, I would rate the final portion of this trail to be hard.

We made the lake in approximately 4 hours from the boat dock. The lake was 90% frozen. At the lake my wife and I and one other hiker we met along the final 1/4 mile, congratulated each other and shared a snack. We took a few pictures and headed back. My opinion on the lake, wait until it starts to thaw and the trail opens up. It’s was awesome but the last push was steep and very slippery with us occasionally dropping to our hip in snow.

We quickly ascended as frankly we did not want to miss the last ferry across the lake and add three miles to this 17 mile hike. While this trail is an out and back, the vistas, abundant wildlife and flowers keep this trail a 5 star in both directions. We stopped several times to take pictures and an extended time to give first aid to fallen hiker. In all the assent took another three and one half hours from the lake. We made the ferry, loosened our boots and reflected on a great day.

I highly recommend this hike as it was one of the most amazingly beautiful hikes I have taken.
