One of the things that is true about St. John is that its beauty also intersects with a hard and tortured history. Black St. Johnians often came here through enslavement and have lived without proper tribute to that pain. As you visit the sugar mills and engage, you start to take that in. Ram Head Trail is the one place where you can bring through the parts of the place that represent its most beautiful and it's dark past.
Enslaved people who successfully rebelled and escaped were almost recaptured. Instead they chose to be taken by the sea There is no more honorable act and it makes Ram Head Trail a sacred place. On the way up enjoy the most spectacular views. Amazing for sunrise, sunset, and full moon hikes. All of which I hope I will experience some day.

Wear the right shoes and leave your stuff at the beach. No need to drag it. Take lots of water and wear sunblock. There is very little shade. I would recommend you be in decent shape. Lots of rocks to walk over and it very humid and hot.

Ram Head Trail is a nice morning hike. About 3.0 miles round trip from where you park. Head to Salt Pond Beach and then follow the trail at the far end of the beach to the right along the rocks. Hike is a low to moderate in difficulty. Can be done in sneakers although hiking shoes maybe better. Follow along to Blue cobblestone Beach walk to the far end to the left and pick up trail again. Great views along the way and at the top. Bring water. Even if you go early ot gets hot!

It's a short hike with fabulous views, but it does get hot and has very little shade! Take a lot of water and go early. Hold on to your hat towards the top as it gets very windy. We regret not bringing a bathing suit to take a dip in Salt Pond Beach at the end!

This epic hike goes past 2 different and gorgeous beaches on the way to Ram Head. Beautiful scenery along most of the hike and loved seeing all the barrel cactus on the way up. The views from Ram Head are equally impressive with 360 views all around. You can easily see the British Virgin Islands and even St. Croix on a clear day. With that said, be prepared, and bring more water than you think you need!

This is a fun hike in St. John. Last year, we did this hike to be at the top of Ram Head before sunset, strongly recommended if you don't mind waking up early. Great views of the moon to the west and the sun rising to the east. This year, we got started on the hike around 8am. From the parking lot, it's around 2.6 miles round trip. We are in reasonably good shape in our 60's and it took us around 1 hour 20 minutes taking our time and taking pictures along the way. Add another 15 minutes at the top of Ram Head so the entire hike should only take a little over 1.5 hours. Note, it gets very hot and there is little shade so the hike will be a lot less enjoyable and likely will take longer if you leave after 8:30 or so. The trail is fairly rocky, lightweight hiking shoes or trail shoes or, at least, running shoes are recommended. Wouldn't do this in sandals.

This was a hike well worth the view at the end! Walk across a sandy beach, traverse a rocky beach, then up through trees before the last leg through scrub and cacti. Most of the trail in the hot sun. Take water, wear decent shoes, enjoy the view!

This is a fun an relatively easy hike, leading from a parking lot that can accommodate about 12-15 cars (depending on how creatively you can park a car), downhill to the Salt Bay beach (bring water shoes as it is rocky under the water). After you walk along the beach, the trail continues and is fairly easy going. Then you get to Blue Cobblestone Beach, which is quite spectacular and easier to walk on than you'd think. Past the length of the beach (I would walk along the water where the rocks are a bit smaller) you encounter some large boulders that you have to clamber over. We saw some older people having difficulty and were going on their behinds. As long as you're careful, it isn't too bad. Then the trail sweeps upwards, through a field of cactuses that are something to behold. Definitely climb your way uphill to the end for beautiful vistas. It took us about 2 hours there and back, then a quick dip in the Salt Bay beach (again, bring water shoes!), before heading back uphill to the car.

We should have listened to the other reviews - GO EARLY unless you want to feel like you might die. We got there before 8am but honestly wished we got there at like 6:30am. It gets HOT and you are exposed to the sun most of the way. Bring triple the water you think you will need.
Not the most strenuous hike I have ever done but with the heat, I was feeling sick and wanted it to be over at the halfway point. My fault!
Overall - amazing views and cool hike - we hiked on sand, rocks and dirt, so that was neat. Worth going for sure, but heed the warnings. ;)

Planning on taking the ferry from St. Thomas, how would you suggest getting the the start of Ram Head Trail
Rédigé le 1 mars 2015
Too late for the original question. You can take the bus from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond for $1 a person. The bus leaves at 25 after the hour from Cruz Bay and 10 after the hour from Salt Pond (verify with the bus website, since the schedule can change). The ride is about 45 minutes and there is a scheduled stop at the medical center and stops to pick up and drop off travelers.
