I was curious to nip into the gallery having had a delightful cup of tea in Rumpus Cosy (different review...)

Very impressed at the exhibition on currently (May) 'Not here' I believe. Very eclectic. Some mysterious etchings, a powerful dark painting, a 3D wooden nest, even a video on loop. Thought provoking words as well. Probably the most diverse exhibition I have seen but not too big, just 1 room you can get round in 15 mins or less.

Interested to read how the charity that run it work with disadvantaged young people and often use them to help curate shows. This exhibition was curated with art students from uni. Not your typical stuffy art world type of thing. If you fancy a new perspective and a wider range of medium, definitely give it a look. They deserve our support. Free entry too.

And definitely grab a cup of tea and piece of cake next door! Brilliant!

On Saturday 27th June we held a private party at Rumpuscosy for my boss's 50th birthday. She's quite a special person, so we wanted the evening to be special too. It turned out to be one of the loveliest, most sparkling and fun evenings you could ever imagine - and definitely very special. Thank you so much Rumpuscosy for making it so!

I already knew of Rumpuscosy, the tea-rooms/cafe part of Effervescent Social Alchemy - an arts organisation with social change at its heart. Rumpuscosy is delightful in every way, atmospheric, creative, interesting, unique, pretty and so so comfortable and friendly. I love its different mis-matching furniture and tea-cups, I love its music, I ADORE its food and its staff is really helpful and absolutely fantastic too.

Having met the organiser a few weeks earlier to talk about what we'd like for the party, they couldn't do enough to help make it just as we'd like it on the evening. We were able to bring our own extra fairy lights, bunting, candles and all sorts of little personal touches which they put up for us for the evening and took down for their normal service the next day. But even without those, the place looks fabulous, with loads of little lights, gorgeous sparkly things and gold bits making it such a special environment.

Afterwards, everything had been put away carefully and safely, ready for collection by us and there was no hassle about coming to pick it up at a certain time or anything that made life difficult. The whole thing was as easy as it possibly could be, thanks to Rumpuscosy's accommodating staff.

As many of those attending the party were musicians and singers, we asked if it would be ok to bring a PA and have live music - absolutely fine - nothing was too much trouble. Their staff were happy to provide recorded music and they even put together a special playlist via Spotify too, just in case we needed to fill any gaps. So music was magnificent, atmosphere was amazing, staff were superb. The buffet was absolutely delicious, fresh and tasty and also good value as it included some gorgeous cocktails for all the guests on arrival, which looked so beautiful in their glasses with their little umbrellas and strawberries!

The only thing that Rumpuscosy needs is some big fans in the ceiling to cool the place down a bit. All that dancing and excitement made the place quite hot, but having the doors open was lovely and helped. They even provided a doorman!

Absolutely everyone at the party had an amazing night and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, all saying that the venue was beautiful.

I'd absolutely definitely recommend this as a party venue, it has a fantastic atmosphere and everyone's so helpful and friendly. If you want something formal, very smart and posh this might not be the place for you. Rumpus is all about enjoying yourself and having fun. A fabulous place!

Rumpus Cosy is a delightful haven where the food, drink and staff are all first class. Having tried afternoon tea with incredibly delicious cake and the most beautiful cup of tea ever and a superb evening meal with fantastic food and wine, I cannot disagree more with negative comments about stuffy staff. Well worth a visit.

I'd like this place to take off but it's stumbling and a bit ham. Came in yesterday to look at Unnatural Pleasures. Bit like a foundation course end of term exhibition at an art college. Not helped by the pretentious ineffectual 'Curator's Interpretation' labels struggling to give substance to a dries of very uninspiring pieces. Two separate series of single colour horizontal fluorescent tubes (see the management photos above) which offer nothing. Some suspended white drip shapes like oversized albino sweet potatoes resembling unlit commonplace stairwell lighting and a large hanging of rouched black materiel spilling on to the floor that may have come from a small cinema or funeral parlour. Where does any of that leave us?

Thank you for your thoughts on the present exhibition. Radiant, and our bistro Rumpuscosy, wants people to have an enjoyable time while with us. With our exhibitions - with any exhibition - there will of course be works that speak to people, and those that are less successful for the individual. In fact it would be very odd if you liked all of the work all of the time! The curators interpretations are written by different young peole who are responsible for the selection and hanging of the show, and show their own thoughts on the work. We hope by doing this that it will encourage others to see that their own interpretations are equally valid. Your comments include some interesting metaphors that seemed apposite when you viewed the work - seeing the wall hanging as possibly funereal is an observation unique to you, and is something you have read into what that work could mean to you. I would say, come back, spend some time and see what else takes shape. Or/and, please do come back for the next show!

The latest exhibition is OK. Maybe we came in too soon. Most of the small clusters of folk taking a look ground didn't look as if they were just in off the street but were al out all talking and behaving as if they were all in some way part of or connected with the either a very tight not local art scene or part of the community group who have opened this mix of activities in this redundant retail space. It's one of the reasons why years ago I stopped taking up invites to previews or opening nights at plymouth galleries. If people turn up just to perform in front of their mates or to exhibit some kind of haughty arty engagement and networking then it is not an ideal setting for we mere mortals to slink in and absorb the impact of the Instalations. Let's hope soon listens up a bit and becomes more inclusive.

Thank you very much for your review. We appreciate anyone taking time to share their experience with us. I am sorry that you felt a bit isolated when you visited. I think this was the opening night? Inevitably, these tend to be attended by those that might know each other, being people that go to lots of these types of things. And it was the case that the group of young people we helped curate this show had invited teachers, friends and family to see what they had done. As they had not done anything like this before, it was nice they could have their 15 minutes and show others their achievement. but, we want to be a welcoming, inclusive venue, and will look into how we can engage people better - possibly, although we are a very small organisation, we need more people identified as staff that can talk to individuals. Although much is often made of the opening night, the exhibition is on until the 17th of April. I hope you will consider coming back - the gallery is generally quieter, with only a couple of people in there at any time. We don't want to be elitist - we believe art is for everyone! Thank you once again for your comments, this is only our third show, and we are learning as we go...

Radiant is home to the wonderful Effervescent, a dynamic arts company who thrive amongst society, giving a creative outlet to individuals who may need an escape from their everyday lives. This whole building has been transformed into a hive of goodness and culture; featuring art exhibitions curated by young people and energetic, life-changing workshops. Alongside the gallery blossoms the fabulous Rumpus Cosy, a corner of comfort! With spectacular furniture, food, service (and of course scrumptious cake) it is definitely a place to visit!

Effervescent are producing vital, exciting and life transforming art exhibits at Radiant. They train young people to plan curate and contextualise some of the most exciting art shows in Plymouth. The exhibit are fresh and dynamic maybe because of the young people behind them but also due to the fantastic work of Ellie & Ray. A must see!

A hospitable venue in the centre of Plymouth showing contemporary visual art. I have visited many galleries in my time all over the country and only a few impress me as much as Radiant did. I was made to feel immediately welcome by the staff upon entering the gallery and encouraged to engage with the exhibited work and ask any questions. Just enough information was given about each of the artworks, not too much to overwhelm. The space is obviously challenging as it is not a conventional white cube, but the staff have programmed accordingly.

I have never been to Plymouth or Radiant before and this was a great first impression of both. Unfortunately I didn't get chance to stay long, but I hope the rest of the arts in the area is up to this standard. The work in the current exhibition was both through-provoking, emotive and well presented. When I learned that the gallery had worked with a group of 18-25 year old 'Young Curators' to devise the exhibition UNNATURAL PLEASURES I was even more impressed with their professionalism and ability. Great for the future of the arts and creative scene in the South-West! I think I am right in saying that Radiant/Effervescent work with young (sometimes difficult) groups frequently to realise projects together. More of this please....

The food in the adjoining Rumpus Cosy is worth sticking around for too, esp. the Sticky Toffee Pudding and the drinks are quality. Yum.... (ask at the bar for the vanillia soda! WOW).

My advice upon visiting would be to talk to the staff and engage - it will enhance your experience and visit.

Some kind of community arts set up including some embryo photography etc activities occupy the ground floor shell space of a fifties building long occupied by the Gas Board and then a building society before lying empty. Rumpus Cosy the tea and coffee space is apparently turning into a restaurant, the corner space near the traffic lights has several busy looking desks but the middle space has been part boarded and we did see an unusual installation last summer/autumn constructed of thousands of strands of coloured threads producing a twist shape with a rainbow colour effect from some angles. There was also a Christmas grotto type creation in the run up to Christmas. OK as far as these things go. The complex is now advertising, mostly on Facebook, a new exhibition called 'Unnatural Pleasures' which is open until mid April.

Dear madam, thanl you very much for what is our first ever review! The whole ground floor, offices, studio, gallery and Rumpuscosy are run by Effervescent. We are an organisation that works with young people through the arts and creativity. Profits from the tearoom (which you are correct to say is blossoming into a fully fledged restaurant) go towards maintaining the building and related costs. All of the exhibitions in the gallery are selected by different groups of young people. This is a unique project in the country, giving young people the control over the work of professional artists, building shows that examine something fundamentally important for the group. Occasionally the gallery will be empty while we take down and install the next show, but i hope people will bear with us - we are a small organisation!
