It was a pleasant surprise to set off on our walk around Belgravia from South Kensington station, and to find this unusual bronze memorial to the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, by sculptor Imre Varga. Apparently Bartok always stayed with friends just a couple of hundred yards away, whenever he travelled to London in the years between the two world wars, to study the folk music of this country. He is depicted standing on a bed of leaves, together with a small bird. The original sculptor unveiled the statue in 2004 at the age of 81, but it has since then been relocated on the opposite pavement due to road changes in the area.

This is a bronze statue of the great Hungarian composer Bela Bartok (1881-1945) by his compatriot Imre Varga. It depicts him wearing a dapper suit A joint commission by the Hungarian Cultural Embassy and the Peter Warlock Society it was first unveiled in 2004 on a traffic island south of South Kensington station but had to be moved to accommodate the pedestrianisation of roads in the area following the completion of which it was unveiled a second time in 2011 this time at the end of a section of pavement. It is fitting that there should be a Bartok memorial in South Kensington because from 1922 to 1937 whenever he visited London he stayed with Sir Duncan and Lady Wilson at 7 Sydney Place.

We actually went out of our way to visit this statue's twin in Paris. We we're delighted to stumble across this while exploring London. We came around a corner and there Bartok was! Beautiful statue honoring a great man.

We were wandering around Kensington when we came across this lovely memorial to Bela Bartok looking like he was just standing in the street. My husband likes classical music so was able to tell me something about this Hungarian composer.
It is so nice in London to come across sculptures in the street that interest you enough to research more about the subject.
It appears that Bartok was a frequent visitor to London and stayed in the Kensington area.

Bela Bartok Memorial is located right outside South Kensington Station, opposite Carluccio's restaurant on the corner of Old Brompton Road and Pelham Street. I was here earlier in February while visiting my alma mater in the area. I happened to walk across this beautiful statue and was intrigued by the memorial, only to find out that Bela Bartok was a famous Hungarian composer who lived in South Kensington during every visit. The statue also has an interesting set of bird and leaves on the bottom of it. Definitely interesting. This is part of the heritage of London!
