Quartier: Aventin

Many times we have seen it from the bus or from our car, and we always had the desire to visit it one day.
That day came and we had plenty of time to admire all its details.
The church of St. Camillus de Lellis is dedicated to the saint born in Bucchianico (Chieti) in 1550 and who dedicated his life to assisting the sick. The church is located between Via Sallustiana and Via Piemonte, and was built in the neo-Romanesque style with Gothic influences, by the architect Tullio Passarelli between 1906 and 1910.
Many many details recall the great northern European churches of the 11th century.
The design of the church and convent of the Camillan Fathers is by the architect Tullio Passatelli.
The works began in 1906 and were completed in 1910.
The façade, made of red brick, now rather darkened by time, has three entrance portals.
The upper order is dominated by a central rose window with the symbols of the evangelists.
The quadrangular bell tower is 30 meters high, is made of brick, like the church, and ends in a pyramidal spire covered with bronze plates.
The interior has a Latin cross plan with three naves.
On the main altar is the statue of St. Camillus de Lellis (by Alberto Galli, 1911).
There are three entrances approached by steps, one very large and two smaller ones for the side aisles. The tympanum has a relief carving of Christ Presenting St Camillus to Sick People The two side entrances are similar to the main one, but simpler with only one order and a pair of supporting columns. The carved reliefs in the two smaller tympani are Christ between Children and The Pardon of the Adulteress. Above these two entrances are a pair of smaller, simpler rose windows.
It has three naves, and the stained glass windows represent the twelve apostles, while the transept windows display Our Lady with the Christ Child and Christ with angels.
The nave, aisles and transept have cross-vaults, which are undecorated but their height is impressive.
In the counter-façade, on the wooden 'cantoria', there is a pipe organ (1910-1911), built by Carlo Vegezzi-Bossi, based on a project by Filippo Capocci. The musical instrument was donated by Queen Margherita of Savoy,

Very impressive church. Dedicated to Saint Camillus, this is a 1910 Neo-Gothic church of dark brick with grey travertine accents. The façade has a large arch over the central doorway, with smaller arches on each side (over other doors); above is a large rose window. The 15th century saint for which the church is named apparently lived in a nearby monastery. We were the only ones there on a November morning so it was very peaceful.

Recomendo a visita.
