Place Verte is a large, car-free square in the Lower Town (the "Ville Basse") of Charleroi. Despite its unusual two tone striped paving, our first impression was that of a vast, soulless empty space. However, there are a few noteworthy buildings, like the impressive Central Post and Telegraph Office at the corner of Boulevard Tirou, now housing bookshop Molière (reviewed elsewhere). It was designed by architect M. de la Croix in Flemish Renaissance Revival style and built between 1907 and 1911. The bookshop also occupies the house next door, on Place Verte, designed by Marcel Leborgne in 1953. We also liked the former "Banque de Charleroi" (now IFAPME) designed by architect Émile Devreux in 1920 and the building at Boulevard Tirou 109 (now Galeria Inno) by architects Jean-Marie Plumier (exterior) and André Dautzenberg (interior) dating from 1951.
As architecture lovers, we studied old pictures of Place Verte (formerly called "Place Albert I") and discovered that several historic features have disappeared: an elegant bandstand, the House of the Corporations by architect Joseph André (1925), replaced by an ugly office high-rise (Centre Albert or "Tour Baudoux") in the 1960s, and the "Colonnade" (1952) by architect Joseph André, demolished in 2015 to make way for the Rive Gauche shopping centre. The price of modernisation! What surprised us most, however, was the fact that Boulevard Tirou, which runs along the side of Place Vert, has been created by paving over the Sambre River. There even was a bridge over the Sambre leading to Place Verte!

Place Verte is a rather big square in the Lower Town ( Ville Basse ) of Charleroi .
There's not much to it really ,the square is dominated by Rive Gauche Shopping Centre ,a big hotel ,a couple of interesting old buildings and some cafe's and fast food outlets ,the square itself is sparse ,no statues of any note ,no street art ,it looks well kept but it's just not that interesting really .
