This is truly a great cultural experience. Fabulous that this temple has been preserved for the future.

My wife and I visited this Temple during our recent holiday in Bendigo. We donated $5 (which is the suggested amount mentioned by the Receptionist) upon entry.

We read about the history of this Temple from the information presented on various boards hanging on the walls in the reception area.

This Temple is believed to have been built on this site in 1856. It has a long history as a place for prayers for the chinese community in Bendigo.

It is only a small Temple and it does not take long to go through the few rooms.

I always enjoy understanding local history. This place represents mid to late 19th century Chinese history in Bendigo from a religious sense. Not a large museum but worthwhile visiting.

Perfect autumn day I visited so the small garden and res building against the blue, blue sky were striking. A couple of rooms to look at, lots of colour and textures and the smell of the burning incense. It has just reopened after some decorating, not sure what was done but everything looked fresh and clean. I took the talking tram there and once I had finished at the Joss House I walked the creek trail to Lake Weeroona and made my way to Tram stop 4 to head back to the CBD.

Very interesting but can be viewed in a short time so be aware of this if travelling there by the on-off tram which only comes by every 30 minutes or so

Thank you, your feedback is greatly appreciated! We're pleased to see you found the experience to be interesting. If you have time while waiting for a Vintage Talking Tram to arrive, we recommend also including a visit to PepperGreen Farm which is located opposite the tram stop.

Greeted firstly by a pondful of hungry fish, with a bowl of food on the edge to keep them happy. Once inside we were greeted by a very knowledgable and friendly volunteer who was able to give the history of the Joss House. Self guided tour with information sheet. Great that this Joss House was able to be kept for all to see.

If this place is of religious significance to you, then by all means, go ahead. If it's not, then read the reviews ahead of time and decide if this is something you'd like. Mentioning this because I didn't read the reviews and ended up being disappointed.

Very small area with different places to worship. Was personally not very interesting, even with the writeups.

Two stars for 01) this place is 150 years old (and the ticket goes to the upkeep) and 02) the lovely Manager who was friendly and informative.

Go to the Golden Dragon Museum instead, it has the history of the Chinese settlement in Bendigo as well as....Dragons!

Thanks for sharing your review. We appreciate your feedback and are disappointed to see that your experience didn't meet expectations. Perhaps a future visit to our Lantern Festival might be of interest, with fantastic performances by the Bendigo Chinese Association's Lion Teams and Plum Blossom Dancers.

Chinese gold miners began arriving in Bendigo in the 1850s, during the Great Australian Goldrush. The Joss House was built in 1871, it functioned as a house of worship and community center. The main temple is dedicated to Guan-Di, who is the god of war and business. He is also regarded as a wise judge and peacemaker. The Joss House is extremely rare, it is built in traditional Chinese style, of local materials. Red is the favored color in China, it is considered to be auspicious.
