La cattedrale di Gyor, dedicata all'Assunzione della Vergine, è una chiesa imponente che si trova in una stradina del centro di Gyor nelle vicinanze di quel che resta delle antiche mura. La facciata è tutta bianca e mette in evidenza le tre navate grazie alle relative finestre biforate; la facciata è sormontata da un timpano. Nel centro c'è un campanile con una cupola verde. Se già dall'esterno ci sono tutti i presupposti del barocco ungherese, questi trovano conferma all'interno. La volta è interamente affrescata; ma non è tanto la volta ad essere barocca, quanto alcuni particolari dell'interno della chiesa, primo fra tutti il pulpito, a forma di conchiglia con un robusto parapetto e con decorazioni di putti e angioletti. Nell'undicesimo secolo c'era qui una chiesa romanica che fu distrutta ai tempi dell'invasione mongola. Fu ricostruita di lì a poco ma è solo nel diciassettesimo secolo che, grazie a un architetto italiano, Giovanni Battista Rava, assunse gli attuali contorni barocchi.

Just nu under restaurering, man tror nästan att kyrkan är stängd, om det inte var för gudstjänstens besökare, som man har upptäckt att kyrkan är öppen. Värt ett besök.

Die Basilika wirkt ganz nett, aber nach dem Rathaus, der barocken Altstadt mit der Karmelitenkirche und dem großen, von gepflegten Barockhäusern umsäumten Hauptplatz, hat mich der Dom nicht so umgehauen wie erwartet.
Das Hotel daneben empfinde ich als Schandfleck und finde es schade, dass man an stelle des Hotels nicht die alten Gebäude stehen lassen hat, in dieser in sich so kompletten, gepflegten Stadt.
Von innen konnte ich die Basilika leider nicht sehen, sie war verschlossen, werde ich aber nachholen, da ich in nächster Zeit öfters in Györ sein werde.
Das Hotel daneben empfinde ich als Schandfleck und finde es schade, dass man an stelle des Hotels nicht die alten Gebäude stehen lassen hat, in dieser in sich so kompletten, gepflegten Stadt.

The church was partially under renovation, and the cover was imaginative, showing the originaly view of the church.
The inner building is a bit dark -for those who are used to big open spaces in churches- but this is a church dating back from Roman style, rebuilt severaly times.
Inside there is the famous Madonna paiting, the frescos, etc
Look for the actual Roman tombstone pieces from the outside, on the (Northern?) wall!

Deze mooie kathedraalbasiliek is van oorsprong een Romaanse kerk uit de 11e eeuw en na een verwoesting herbouwd in de periode tussen de 13e en 15e eeuw. Het zeer prachtige vroeg barokke interieur, tijdpad 1635 -1650 is een ontwerp van de Italiaanse kunstenaar/ontwerper Giovanni Battista Rava. Je treft er ook de schitterende laat barokke preekstoel uit circa 1770 aan, uitgevoerd in rood getinte marmersoort. Langs de marmeren trap die naar de preekstoel leid is een prachtig versierd smeedijzeren leuning en hekwerk, daterend uit 1783, in laat barokke stijl aangebracht. Kortom het interieur van dirt kerkcomplex is zeer aanbevelenswaardi om te bezoeken.

This beautiful church is a baroque treasure. Well worth a visit. Fabulous paintings and lots of gold.

If you are in Gyor this basilica is really worth a visit. Magnificent interior, highlighted by beautiful frescas.

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Gyro was bestowed the status of a Minor Basilica in 1997 by Pope John Paul II. The original Romanesque church built in the 11 th century was destroyed during Turkish occupations. Rebuilt in the early Baroque style during the 13th to 15th centuries after the Turkish invasions, the tower of the basilica was not completed until 1680. The highly decorated interior with magnificent ceiling and wall frescos was finished in 1780. The pulpit is a sculptural masterpiece.
On the northern aisle is a famous painting of Mary and the infant Jesus which was said to cry tears of blood on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1697.
