This was the first time to travel with two small children to Srimangal, but it was worth it! Joy as well as Liton where very helpful. We went to see the lake, tribal life, monkeys in the Lowacherra Park and tea gardens. Since we were asking many questions about the tribal life, flora and fauna, it was also good for Liton to learn again new things ;-). Just a pity to see all the pollution - it takes away so much of the beauty of nature of Bangladesh, like it is poluting your eye and experience as well.
Sometimes there needed to be a bit more specific attention for the safety of the kids, especially since they move and behave differently then Bangladeshi kids or then what Bangladeshi adults are used to. A collision with a riksja or cng, stumbling over bumps or holes on the road, open electric wires, unhygienic materials/places, dirt and dust, aggressive monkeys.... anything could happen and then you notice there is some sort of danger for small children in every corner. Nevertheless we could manage and they fully enjoyed everything, surviving on French fries, toast and bananas. :-D

Had 10 hours to kill in Bangladesh as I had an early arrival in the morning at Dhaka and a departure in the late afternoon.
Joanna arrange a driver for a short trip to some very interesting sites outside Dhaka such as the Folk Arts and Crafts Museum at Sonargoan (and its park), Panam City (Panam Nagar) & Goaldi Mosque. The chosen chauffeur was an excellent driver and despite his poor English in every way very helpful.

I also stayed in Golpata Bed & Breakfast for 3 nights. In the chaotic city of Dhaka this is real haven. Rooms are spotless clean and good breakfast in the morning.
Run by the friendly Joanna who is all the time very helpful and replies quickly on mails.
The place is not far from the airport so one should not worry about getting in traffic jams on your way to the airport. Several possibilities to get to the old city of Dhaka (CNG, buses, taxi).

We (2 young women from Belgium) spent 6 days in total with our amazing guide Liton in Sylhet (3 days) and Sreemangal (2 days) + transport from and to Dakha (where we stayed in their guest house for one night).
I will not describe every step of our trip (do not hesitate contact Golpata and Fair2!) but I will highlight the main points!

Basically, we contacted Fair2 which is a travel agency in Holland. They work in Bangladesh with Golpata Eco Tours. They suggested us a couple of itinerary, based on what we were looking for and our expectations and budget.

First of all - and most important - let's talk about our guide Liton! He lives in Sreemangal and know the region (as well as people) very well! He's super nice, happy to share everything he knows about his country. He is super open for any kind of discussion and pay always attention to his 'guests' (us and maybe you in the future) to be sure they enjoy their trip and are feeling well.
Without Liton, this trip would have been very different so a big thank you Liton!

Then, I would say a word about Golpata which organize authentic trip for its guests. They pay attention to culture, to environment, to preserve Bangladesh from massive and respectfulness tourism. Liton was a good example of that: he always explained us the us et coutume of the communities or place where we where, we took public transport as much as possible, he has a long experience as tourist guide and so can understand the cultural attention points between European people and Bengali people. Thanks to him, we felt welcoming and ready to discover the region of Sylhet and Sreemangal!
Also a special thanks to Arno who stay in Dakha and took care of us where we were there, at the guest house of Golpata.

The program was varied: boot trips, hiking in the forest (it was adapted to our capacities), tuk tuk in the tea gardens, homemade bengali food, visits of holy place for Muslims and attending to a Hindu celebration of Krishna, discovering an open-air market, ...

We were conflicted as to how to rate this tour as there were some things that we were really appreciative of, and some things that really frustrated us. Overall we thought this tour gave an authentic and unique glimpse into Bangladesh with the safety of travelling with a local and the added bonus of your tourist dollars going to a socially responsible company.

CONTACT WITH THE OWNER
Our initial contact with the company was via email with the company owner, Joanna. Joanna was very friendly and responsive in her emails. She let us know timeframes for responses and explained when she needed time to get back to us. She made us feel at ease travelling to a country where reports in the media might make you think twice about travelling there. She also provided us with a letter of invitation, which is crucial for getting a visa into the country (our tip is to print out one letter per person as the official that was processing our visa on arrival wasn’t going to accept one print out between two people at first). A few things could have been improved with our interactions with Joanna however. There were some details of the trip that we would have appreciated being explained upfront rather than finding out on or just before the tour. These were as follows:
1. I don’t believe she mentioned the various types of classes for the train and which class we would be travelling on. After a 4 hour wait at the train station for the overnight train I was expecting we were in the highest class, which was the AC sleeper. However we were booked on the AC seat section for our 11 hour overnight train journey. That section ended up being surprisingly comfortable, however I was a bit tired and cranky at that point and was wondering why they hadn’t booked a bed and whether we were getting good value for the money we paid. I re-read our email exchange after the trip ended and the itinerary didn’t mention the class of ticket. Joanna did mention that the train cost 1500 per seat when I asked her about the difference in price and time for the train vs going by plane for that leg of the journey.
2. Our tour included dropping us back at Golpata B&B at the end of our journey or else we could explore Dhaka at our own expense. When we were booking the tour Joanna didn’t mention that the B&B is two hours by road from the port and that there aren’t really any attractions around the B&B. She also didn’t mention at that point that if you don’t go back to the B&B straight from the port you will need to make your own way back at your own cost and the company will pocket the cost of the forfeited trip. We mentioned to our tour guide on the day the tour began that we wanted to explore around the port area on our own after arriving back at Dhaka and asked him about whether we could choose the timing of our transfer back to the B&B. He said we had plenty of time to discuss that during the trip and that we’d be able to work something out. On the morning of the second last day we asked again and he suggested that we could do a tour with him or else he could give us the money for the car and part ways with us at the port. We said we wanted to do that second option, however when we asked him again on the last night he said we would have to get the refund from Joanna, which when we emailed her she refused to provide
3. With the payment, Joanna gave us the option of paying via bank transfer, which she said didn’t involve any extra fees. She didn’t explain that we would have to pay any fees that the bank passed on to her until after we had made the payment. She did let us know as soon as she received the money that the bank had charged us 9 euro which she asked us to pay on arrival. However when we arrived we were told there was an additional 7 euro on top of the 9 euro that they wanted which we hadn’t been given a heads up about even though we had been emailing Joanna the night before. When we disputed that extra amount we received an emailed from Joanna stating that the bank had passed on 5 euros less than what she’d asked us to pay and so she asked us to pay the 9 euro plus the 5 euro. We refused to pay the 5 euro, and she didn’t force us to pay it, however we suspect that that interaction led to her being less accommodating per point 2 above

THE GUIDE
Our guide, Liton, was a wizard when it came to moving us through Bangladesh. He whisked us from one form of transport to another with skill and ease and we must have sampled every possible form of transportation while on our trip with him. That service was invaluable and we would have been completely lost without him. Bangladesh is a hard place to travel as a tourist, and so getting a guide is something we were thankful we did, even though we are generally more independent travellers. As I mentioned previously, we had a four hour wait at the train station, and we would have been freaking out big time if he wasn’t there to find out about the delays and to make sure we were looked after. There is also some corruption in the country and some officials will make life difficult for you until you grease the wheel. We were oblivious to this most of the time, but we suspect Liton was also earning his keep in ensuring that we had smooth passage throughout our journey. There were a few times when he would disappear off somewhere, which was a bit disconcerting. At one point he hopped off the bus at a stop without giving us a heads up and the bus started to drive away without him. We informed one of the bus staff that our guide wasn’t with us and the bus waited for Liton to return, but we were worried for a minute there.
Liton was very knowledgeable and passionate about this country. He would point things out and give us a heads up when there was something special like dolphins that we should be on the lookout for. Ideally we would have liked him to share more about his country. For example, when we asked him to teach us some Bengali, he initially said that most people would understand simple words in English and he told us about people that had been on a longer tour than us that had learnt quite a few words. After further prompting he taught us a few words but we got the impression that he thought we were wasting our time trying. We would have also liked to know from him about how Bangladesh formed as a country. We learnt about this at the National Museum after our tour ended.
We would have liked to be included in conversations more. When Liton met Bangladeshi people he would just speak to them in Bengali and we’d effectively be excluded from the conversation, even when the person he was speaking to also knew English. On our last night he got in a few heated conversations in Bengali with fellow passengers on board our ship. In one conversation we picked up the words “tourist police” and he gestured towards us a couple of times. That made us quite uncomfortable. The person he was talking to told us they were discussing where we should go the next time we visit Bangladesh. Liton had lamented to us a few times on the trip about how underdeveloped tourism is in Bangladesh compared to nearby countries, but fighting over the tourists that are in your country doesn’t help the situation.
We had travelled to Bhutan prior to visiting Bangladesh and Liton was quite interested in that. We’re not sure if it is a cultural difference, but he asked us quite a few intrusive questions about how much we paid for Bhutan and at one point he joked that we’d spent all of our money on Bhutan and wouldn’t have enough money for Bangladesh. It might be that Bangladesh people are more open about discussing money, but for us questions about money are a sensitive topic so that line of questioning made us feel uncomfortable.
Overall Liton was very helpful and tried to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. He looked out for our safety and security and reminded us when we needed to secure our valuables. He’s very entrepreneurial and he knows how to get things moving in Bangladesh. He’s a bit rough around the edges, but he tries his best to ensure you have an enjoyable stay in his country.

THE TOUR
We did a five day tour of the Sundarbans, leaving from and returning to Dhaka. We took the overnight train to Kulna followed by bus, boat and various other land travel to get to our eco lodge. That journey took us 19 hours door to door of hard travel. For those that like adventure and being off the beaten path, this is an authentic and eye opening experience. At the train station you see the grit of everyday life in Bangladesh as you watch people crowd onto trains, even riding on top in order to get to their destination as they compete for limited resources. Bangladeshi people are the friendliest and most curious people we have met on our extensive travel and were the highlight of our trip. At the train station, foreigners are a rarity, and Bangladeshi people will openly stare as they are just not used to seeing people travelling in their country. It’s a bit unnerving at first, but it’s a unique experience standing at a station while a crowd gathers just to look at you. I suspect it must be how Brad Pitt feels every day. Locals will come up to you and have a conversation and you will get more Facebook friend requests than you have ever received in your life. During our tour made some lovely friends who we met up with after our tour was over and who we hope we will keep in contact with for many years to come. Many people invited us to their homes and wanted to share their country with us. It is a shame that not more tourists visit as there are so many misconceptions about the safety of the country.
The Sundarbans are a beautiful area and travelling along the waterways was a highlight of our trip. Unfortunately the tiger population is dwindling rapidly, so supporting this area with your tourist dollars is important for the conservation effort. Dolphins in this area are also a threatened species, so it’s a real treat to see them gliding through the water. We saw quite a few dolphins in our time there.
The eco lodge at the Sundarbans was beautiful and relaxing. The hospitality that we received was phenomenal and the food was some of the best we’ve ever eaten. The garden is really pretty and it is so relaxing to be there. It is very rustic so don’t expect too many mod cons, but it is absolutely charming, and such a nice experience to stay in an over water bungalow. On the last night the owners son played music for us and the owner sang along. That was really sweet and very memorable.
The Sundarbans tour is very pleasant and quite a unique experience. They chartered a boat just for us and it was lovely floating down the river, admiring the view. We made two stops at the Sundarbans. On the first one there are tigers in the area and we saw some tiger footprints. You need an armed guard with you for safety and our guard was quite a character, setting up some cool poses for photos. The other stop was the zoo, where we particularly enjoyed seeing monkeys and crocodiles as well as feeding deer.
We really enjoyed the trip back to Dhaka on the rocket steamer ship. We stayed in a first class cabin and the cruise had an old world charm about it. The ship was built last century and everything is well worn, so don’t expect western style luxury, but it’s a wonderful experience and was a great way to end our trip.
We appreciated that we were able to use one of the rooms at the B&B on our first day there even though we were leaving Dhaka for the tour that night. We also appreciated that Liton took care of the costs of bathroom stops when we were on the road (be prepared for a few squat toilets along the way and BYO toilet paper and hand sanitiser).
Going to the Sundarbans is more expensive than some other areas of Bangladesh and this tour was cheaper than most of the other tours from competing companies. We thought that there was still a fair bit of margin built in compared to doing it yourself, however you are paying for the convenience and the piece of mind of being looked after. Overall we were happy with our tour and were glad that we booked via this company.

Was overweldigend.

This group put together an amazing agenda of sightseeing, cultural activities, hiking and biking for me at a moment's notice on a recent trip to Bangladesh. I am a solo female traveler and appreciated the extreme care they took with me and the well-thought out organization of everything they did. If you want to get up close and personal with Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi people and Bangladeshi culture,GET is fantastic. They know what they are doing and have networks throughout the country. And, to top it off, the proceeds from their activities go to support a number of children's shelters so I felt good about my trip in more ways than one!

GOLPATA ECO TOURS (Dhaka City): Ce qu'il faut savoir pour votre visite (avec photos)
