First time in Austin... just one day... there was a lot to see. A visit to the Capitol is a must-see, as is a visit to the University of Texas campus.

The Main Building of the University of Texas at Austin, more commonly known as the Texas Tower or simply The Tower, is a 27-floor, 307-foot-tall structure located at the center of the university's campus and is the most recognizable landmark in all of surrounding area. It is to Austin what the Washington Monument is to Washington DC. Designed by Paul Philippe Cret in a Beaux-Arts architecture style, it was completed in 1937. At the top is a carillon of 56 bells, the largest in Texas, which os played daily. Originally planned as a library space, the building now mainly contains administrative offices and a three-floor life sciences library and the Miriam Lutcher Stark Library of early and significant editions of English Romanticist works. Two secure elevators provide access to all 27 floors of the Tower while an elevator on the 27th floor provides access to the 28th floor Observation Deck. Perhaps, tragically, the Tower is best known for a 1966 massacre when Charles Joseph Whitman, an architectural engineering student, barricaded himself in the Observation Deck with a scoped Remington 700 deer rifle and other weapons and, during a 96-minute standoff with police, killed 14 people and wounded 32 others. Today, the tower usually appears illuminated in white light in the evening but is lit in burnt orange (school colors) or various color schemes for special occasions, including athletic victories and academic accomplishments. During commencement ceremonies, the Tower windows are lit up to form the year of the graduating class.

Main landmark on University of Texas campus. The tower is infamous as the site of the horrific 1966 mass shooting when a gunmen trained as a sniper climbed to the top of the tower and opened fire on victims below.

The University of Texas Tower is the focal landmark for the university. The Tower and the grounds around it are a nice stroll if you want to get a feel for this university.

Our group of 8 really enjoyed the tour. The student guides were very friendly, knowledgeable, and very well spoken. It's a beautiful view. For $6, we all felt it was very well worth it!

Beautiful views over the Downtown from the observation deck. Before having some time to enjoy the views and take some pictures, University students give some brief history about the university the tower. Tour has to be pre-booked but paid for at the place and you must arrive at least 10min early, also all the bags must be left in the locker for an extra dollar.

If you are interested in the view of the University of Texas campus and nearby downtown Austin, this is a great place to do it. It costs $6.00 and you must make reservations. Total time on the observation deck is around thirty minutes. The UT student guides give a very short talk about the tower as part of this. NOTE: On the day I went it had rained earlier in the day and there were nasty accumulations of water and an incredible number of crickets all around the deck. I asked the UT student guides how they handled the crickets and they stated "they wash out when the next storm hits". If you are interested in the history of the tower, specifically the events of August 1, 1966 it is highly recommended you read the very detailed account of that fateful day "A Sniper in the Tower" by Gary LaVergne. To see the actual locations where three people were beaten or shot to death is very emotional, not to mention the observation deck is where the sniper shot 16 people to death with a high-powered deer rifle, and was subsequently shot to death himself. Incidentally, there is a huge security presence during the tour - you go through a metal detector, you cannot take most large items up to the deck, there are two security officers on the ground level, a security officer rides up in the elevator with you and a 4th officer is positioned on the 27th floor. The UT student guides are not allowed to discuss the events of 1966 with tour guests - they merely refer you to a documentary on the tragedy.

No way to go upstairs today, but we walked all around the Tower......it is a beautiful sight. I hear the view from on top is amazing.....you can see all of Austin. Graduation seating was being set up today on the south side....great pictures of the tower in the background. On the North side, we found the memorial to those lost in the horrible shooting back in 1966....it is there next to the turtle pond...the names of those killed inscribed in the stone.
Sad part of history for this storied building.

As an alum and a witness to the tower shooting the place brings back memories. The ride up is still a thrill and standing on the deck where CHarles Witman stood is creepy. I used to go into the library part of the building, loved the musty smell of old books and pfloor polish. Brings back the days of being a student. And of course the orange lights when Texas wins a football game is a tradition. I recall when DKR won the national championship and the windows lit to make a ONE. That was outstanding.
