Mt Wilhelm is the highest mountain and the best place on earth. Its truly heaven on earth. you will be surprised to see the landscape you did not expect to see and experience the temperature you did not expect to feel. Come and one night only before you miss.

マウントウィリアムにはマンレイクとメリーレイクがある。メラネシアンのピジン語で、男と女という意味だ。冷たい空気の中、ハーハー息を切らし、眺める湖は見ものだ。

I stayed at Betty's Lodge (2,800 meters at the base of the mountain). Betty was extremely hospitable and her lodge offers warm beds, a fire place, and fantastic meals with fresh vegetables and trout from her farm. The jungle is spectacular, as is the scenery. However, the trail above treeline is unmaintained and dangerous. During rain, flat sections of the trail become submerged in water and mud, while the steeper areas wash out into very slippery mud slicks and bare rock. The trail is in dire need of water channeling bars, ladders, and raised platforms and I urge the PNG government to invest in this infrastructure (without it, the mountainside will continue to erode). The huts at the so-called "base camp" situated at the lower mountain lake (3,550 meters) lack mattresses, pillows, blankets, running water, and toilets. The day before I arrived, thieves stole kitchen supplies from one of the huts. It is appalling that the owners charge visitors to stay in these huts, but make no effort to maintain or secure them. Likewise, the road up to Betty's lodge is in a horrid condition. I managed to enjoy my trip only because of Betty's gracious hospitality. I urge everyone to BOYCOTT this mountain until such time as the PNG government does what it necessary to fix and maintain the road, trail, and huts. If you do go, I recommend staying at Betty's and letting her make all mountain arrangements. I also recommend bringing gum boots and a rain poncho, even in the dry season.

Stay at Betty's Lodge, getting this an experience by itself. Several good hikes, a day hike tales you to the first lake and if you really want an adventure you can continue with a night hike arriving in the morning on the summit. Bring warm clothes, you may be on the equator but it gets very cold this high up.

We stayed at Betty's Lodge and booked all of our hiking needs through her. Betty Higgins is the proprieter and can arrange guides and porters. If you are to do it on your own, like my husband and I did (meaning no tour company), then you will need to bring food for at least two lunches, breakfast, dinner and snacks, and water for your mountain hike. You will need to pick these items up before you travel to Betty's because there are no stores around.
Betty arranged one guide and one porter to carry out things to base camp. We rented two very nice-hitech sleeping bags from Betty for PGK40 each. You will need torches, warm clothes, gloves and a hat. Base camp is sparse but mattresses/pillows, cooking utensils/gas, boiled water and outhouse is included.
Day 1: Betty picked us up in Mt Hagen.
Day 2: Leave Betty's at 10:30 am to get to base camp. 1:00 pm Base camp - eat lunch and then take a hike up to Piunde Lake. 5:30 eat dinner. 6:30 pm sleep. 2
Day 3: 1:30 am wak and eat breakfast, 2:15 start hiking, 8:00 am reach summit. 12:30 pm reach base camp. Eat lunch, rest. 3:30 PM leave for Betty's. 4:45 pm arrive at Betty's.
Mountain: The hike is difficult because of the altitude and the crazy hour the hike begins. However, it is not a technical climb -- just long and tiring -- but well worth it. The landscape is amazing and we saw a tree kangaroo, the coast (Madang), the sunrise, the stars and pristine glacial lakes. The trail is not well maintained and it would be wise for the government to consider the environmental impacts of unregulated hiking. There are several areas of hillside erosion due to the steepness of trails and people not sticking to the main trail, there are no water bars to move water off the trail, and there was much trash on the top of Wilhelm and along the trail itself.
Betty's Lodge is amazing. She has her own trout farm and grows wonderful fruits and veggies. We ate trout the two nights we were there and could of had it every day! They really care about providing quality and healthy food that is simple. Of course she only serves local coffee. The rooms are comfortable and plenty of blankets, and tea served in the afternoon by a warm fire.

I climbed Mt Wilhelm in July, accompanied by my son and 2 guides, arranged through Betty's lodge. The scenery was beautiful and the people we met along the way were friendly and helpful. Betty was terrific. Unfortunately, the trail is poorly maintained, muddy and slippery and exposed and dangerous higher up. The base camp consists of an A-frame building and a primitive wood hut with thatch walls. We were told the conditions were 'basic' but they are utterly appalling. The traditional owners do nothing to maintain the place except collect the fee of 80 kina (25 USD) per person per night. The toilet is disgusting. We slipped in many places on the trail because it had not been maintained. Towards the summit you will have to negotiate exposed ridges and some dangerous sections next to cliffs. If you want a high altitude trek and you only have a week, I suggest you climb a volcano like Kilimanjaro where the slopes are more gentle and it is more organised. If you want a well maintained trail with good quality huts, go to New Zealand where you will pay about the same fee out of season. You also won't have to take a 5 hour four wheel drive trip along rough roads to get there.

At the base of Mt Wilhelm where you'll find Betty's trout farm and lodge. You can get a guided tour to the top of the mountain but for the more sedentary a walk around the closer environs are preferable.
Food, well Betty has an amazing garden growing every vegetable you can imagine, ask for fish and chips and you in heaven. Fresh trout, fresh potatoes and delicious salads. Perfect and worth the trip.

I loved climbing Mt William, for physical fitness, metal health and appreciating the shear beauty of the environment and nature. Its safe, affordable and life changing. I would highly recommend.

Hello,
if you just go to the mountain and take a local guide, do they provide sleeping bags? And food?
Thanks, Bernd

Sorry for not replying 9 months ago Bernd!
In case anyone else reads this, I highly recommend you take your own sleeping bag and make sure it is a cold-weather one as it goes down to zero even at the Base Camp. PNG is close tot he Equator, but Mt Wilhelm is over 10,000' high and Base Camp is around 8,000'.
I took a summer sleeping bag and warm clothes and couldn't sleep for the cold! Also, don't forget matches, all they have at Base Camp is a gas stove (occasionally the gas runs out for a few weeks!), a couple of cooking pots and some cups, be at least the stove is in a small wooden shack, out of the wind and rain.

Hi, I have just returned from Mt Wilhelm and seen your question. It's probably late but if required she has a FB page under Betty's lodge
Kind regards
Hi, does anyone know if Betty's Lodge has an email or phone number? I can't find anything on the net and I want to contact them regarding a Mt Wilhelm hike.
Cheers,
Mitch
