What an awesome drive!

We'd never had a chance to drive down this loop before, so, during our July 2021 fishing trip, we opted to take a detour and do some hiking and "off-roading". The scenery is beautiful and the hiking is terrific.

A couple of points:

1. We were up there in July, 2021 and it was hot. Well into the 90's. Take water and snacks and good hiking shoes.

2. Check your tires and tank up before you leave. You'll be well off the beaten path.

3. Camera/Phone. That sounds elementary but the area has some beautiful scenery and stunning views.

A hike would be nice but it was pretty hot that day. We took a scenic drive and stopped every so often to enjoy all the colors. Would be fun to do a little bouldering, we were unprepared with our shoe selection.

We were here the day before Easter. We pulled off the main dirt road that goes to the most popular climbing area and parked on a side road, then hiked up the side road for about a mile and a half. Saw lots of wildflowers in bloom, interesting rock formations, and nice views of the mountains. There were many people up at the climbing area, but we saw only one other car on our hike, and it was very peaceful. I don't know if I'd want to do this during the hot summer months, but it was really nice in April.

Have heard about this area and finally had time for a quick tour. Good dirt roads and cool rocks along with great mountain scenery. Area is very popular with climbers. End of the road was packed with vehicles so we didn't park and wander into the favorite climbing areas. Worth the detour!

Stayed here for two nights over Memorial Day weekend. Though the official campgrounds were all full, we didn't have a problem finding space at Buttermilk. It's primitive camping, so you can go pretty much anywhere, but there are a number of spaces cleared out for camping. It's best to go there so as not to disturb more of the landscape. You need to bring all of your food/water, pack out trash and bury your waste.

Parts of the area are owned by LADWP and labelled as off limits for camping. I saw some rangers drive through the area at night, so it's possible that this could be enforced. The LADWP lands seem to be kind of like no parking zones; if you drive far enough past the initial restricting sign, you'll arrive to another sign demarcating the end of LADWP land, making it okay to camp again.

The views are gorgeous day and night. Starting the morning at the boulders is great and the views of the stars over the mountains are a great way to drift off. Buttermilk Country is at a lower elevation than many of the area hikes, so it stayed fairly pleasant at night and there wasn't snow

Though the roads are dirt, our old Honda Odyssey didn't have any problems.

Worth the drive to see the boulders. They are bigger than you think. We drove around the mountain and the scenery was just breathtaking. Easy drive for any 4 x 4 or high profile 2 wheel drive vehicle

I typically am biased towards forests and mountains but this loop was pretty cool because of the boulders. They were huge and pretty fun to walk through! Also, caught some fantastic views of the mountain ranges from the boulders

We saw a lot of people camping out in the nearby area, probably great if you're an avid climber and hiker. You could get the best of both worlds here.

Typically I am not they outdoors type, but I do recognize beauty when I see it. Went on a little walk about to a small waterfall in the area that our buddy wanted to show us as it was his old stomping ground growing up. The area is a great location to overlook the Owens Valley, as well as the Sierras, especially when the Sierras still have plenty of snow on it.

There is an area that is a bit congested with rock/boulder climbers. You can't miss the area as you will run into all the vehicles parked along the roadside and in make shift parking lots. There are also the random campers in the area as well.

You will agree that this area is superb. The drive itself is beautiful, the hiking is phenomenal and the entire setting is just plain fun in nature. You should be prepared but then you probably already are. Just do it and enjo
