Jarvis Estate, founded in 1985 by William and Leticia Jarvis, is a family-owned winery nestled on 1,320 acres in Napa Valley. Its 45,000-square-foot underground cave system provides optimal aging conditions for their acclaimed wines. Combining traditional methods with modern technology, the estate produces award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay while practicing sustainable viticulture.
We were able to enjoy a guided tour and tasting, while taking in the iconic architecture of Jarvis Estates caves. While digging the caves the construction company came across a water source and instead of finding a way to fix the issue they worked around it and made it one of the more iconic parts of the cave.
The tasting took place within the cave near the waterful which made for an incredible setting to taste wine. We were able to taste 9 wines while at Jarvis Estate which included the following wines; 2020 Finch Hollow Chardonnay, 2018 Cabernet Franc, 2018 Merlot, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Petit Verdot, 2010 Lake William, 2015 Lake William, 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2019 Tempranillo.
Our favorite of the wines were the 2014 and the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. Both showed great structure with pronounced notes of dark fruit and mint. The tasting also included cheese, dried cherry, and nuts. This was one of the most memorable tastings we've been on in Napa and a really great experience.

Beautiful place to visit. The pond in front of the winery has a small waterfall and a path so you can walk around it. The winery/caves are enchanting, with a waterfall, doors that open magestically, a cute tasting room, and knowledgeable guides. The goat cheese, brie and nuts were a great compliment to the wines. Definitely worth a visit.

Very interesting winery located all underground in caves. Beautiful decor. Informative enough tour though a little thin on actual wine making specifics. Wines that are offered for tasting are all good though very pricey. Tasting prices also at high end

Great wines. Great wine tasting experience and tour. With their entire wine making process occurring inside the mountain, this is definitely a tour to consider on your next visit to wine country. Top Notch!

Jarvis was a fabulous surprise! This very elite, low-volume winery has one of the most beautiful underground interiors we've seen...amazing signature arched doors, elegant tasting room, and super-knowledgeable, engaging sommelier Rene. The wine was exceptional and we ordered lots for back at home. This winery may not be on your radar but do yourself a favor and visit....you'll be happy you did!

It was a space that I could not experience at other wineries.
The cave was carved out of a rock mountain, and everything from the office to the grape processing plant, brewery, storage, bottling, and tasting room are all in a cave. There is even a waterfall in the cave, which is something you can only experience here.
The tasting is done slowly in an elegant room, with plenty of crackers and large cheeses, nuts, dried berries, etc. The tasting begins with decanting the old vintage wine.
It is a large amount for a tasting, so you can leave it if you can't finish it, but it would be a shame to leave a bottle of wine that costs $400.
Although this wine is rarely imported into Japan, it is a winery that is well worth visiting.
You can make reservations online from Japan, but you cannot enter the gate without a reservation. If you are going by Uber, get off at the gate and tell the intercom your reservation name and time, and the gate will open, so have the driver take you to the driveway. On the way back, the driver has to open the gate in the same way before entering, so I recommend walking around the garden and meeting outside the gate.

The setting is amazing. The winery unique being entirely in a man-made cave. The staff are absolutely fantastic. The wine great. We could not rate the experience more highly.

This is the most amazing and unique winery in Napa! Built into the side of a mountain, you are immediately struck by the topography and views on the way up to the Jarvis Estate entrance. As you drive onto the property, two flowering lily-pad, frog-filled ponds, bridges, stunning yard art, sitting areas and the cave entrance provide beautiful curb appeal and excitement. When you enter through the large front doors, the coolness of the cave provides refreshing relief from the dry hot Napa temps. We were immediately offered water and one of the staff volunteered to help another couple find a great place to eat in the area. The small on-site staff is very friendly and customer oriented. There is no "hard sell" and a waitlist to join their Members Club.
The tour was so interesting showing each step of the winemaking process from the minute the grapes come into the cave until they are bottled and sealed. Britton was the perfect host and tour guide with so much great information about the history of the winery and of Napa itself. We had 7 tastings with cheese, crackers, dried fruit, nuts and water provided as a palette cleanser on a gorgeous marble table set beautifully in a tasting room. The water features, barrels, Crystal room and and theater space make this our favorite place in Napa. We would do this tour again with our family!

About how long on average does the tour and tasting usually take?

What is the best way to get here from downtown Napa? If I drive here are the wine samples provided enough that I won't be able to drive home, or are the samples pretty small? (The tour says there are 6 wine samples)

Google Maps or Apple's mapping app will locate and take you to Jarvis, fairly easily. Look for the gated entrance on your left as you approach the upper limits of the mountain road. It's a pretty drive.
As for the tasting, I believe you will enjoy 5-6 wines, each about 1 oz. pours, so just slightly over a glass of wine. If this is your only winery visit, it shouldn't be an issue with driving, but you will need to make that call. Good luck and enjoy.
