We had a full day before beginning our safari so hired a driver and the first place he took us was here. My first impression was we won't be in here very long because it looked too commercial. We ended up staying for several hours. We purchased quite a few items that first day and then the last thing our safari group did was come here and we purchased more. Prices are better other places but this is convenient. We had a good lunch at their restaurant. The owner is building a center for Jane Goodall and we had the privilege of seeing her! She was meeting with the architects so that was certainly an added bonus.

This is a great stop - even if a "tourist trap". The outdoor art is wonderful - and have a look indoors too! You can find all sorts of other things - like good batik cotton, and tanzanite - if that's what you are loking for.

We enjoyed the tour to see the instruments and the hands on experiences we had with them. We toured the library and grounds. Our friend was so excited to share with us and his son the Meru hut which was like the one he lived in growing up. We returned to see the performance at 4:00 the next day and totally enjoyed that too.

A great place to see a show, have a tour, or to have a custom class. Fantastic way to learn about the Tanzanian people. The music is amazing.

Excellent, energetic, show with informative commentary about the origins of the various musics and dances. Easy location along the road between Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha.

There's also a little museum attached and some traditional architecture which visitors can get a tour of.

It's hidden away so footfall isn't yet heavy and there's none of normal touristic bother which is nice!

Well worth ringing up to establish when the shows are going to be, though.

Went to the Tues afternoon performance. The dancers and drummers are amazing - so much energy! Had us riveted. Gorgeous new facility, loved that the instrument exhibit was hands on. Our family also participated in dancing and drumming workshops. The instructors did a great job of breaking things down and making sure everyone was comfortable and having fun. Even those in our group that claimed they couldn't dance joined in and had a great time! Do not miss this!

CAC is the best place to know and learn about Tanzanian culture and its people. Expressed through music and dance, authentically, Its definitely worth a visit if you are in Tanzania.

Yes - it's exciting to take photos of amazing animals from a safari in Tanzania; or exhilarating to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro; or incredibly rewarding to offer services as a volunteer missionary in this beautiful country; but if you'd like to return home with a very inexpensive experience that will also remain with you the rest of your life, please plan a visit to the Cultural Arts Center (CAC) in Usa River, Tanzania. If Moshi or Arusha are your home bases for your visit, this is ideal - for the CAC in Usa River is very close by.

First - a brief description of the facilities: there are 4 beautiful, new buildings in a stunning location (Mt. Meru is in the background, almost like it was painted there!). The 4 buildings include a Performance Hall, Conference Center, Dance Studio, and a very unique building in the shape of an African Drum which houses a library, gift shop, cultural archives of tribal traditions in Tanzania ... and much, much more! In addition to these buildings, there are traditional Tanzanian, tribal homes (called bomas) that you can visit (and enter) to see how some Tanzanians still live today.

The highlight of your visit will be seeing and hearing a performance in the impressive new Performance Hall. The musicians and dancers of the CAC perform traditional dances and music chosen from the more than 120 tribes that exist in Tanzania. Not only are these performances interesting, very exciting and fun, the traditional clothing is colorful and fascinating. Without a doubt, young people (children) as well as the seasoned traveler will enjoy the experience of these performances. One of my favorites was something they called Fusion that they perform near the end of their concert. This is a combination of ancient traditional tribal music with familiar modern instruments (guitars and drum sets). This Fusion is almost like something you've heard before - but ... not really!

The Performance Hall is a very comfortable space to experience this performance. It is a covered structure that is open on the sides - plenty of fresh air! There are chairs (with backs) and if you look out the right side of the building, you will see a magnificent view of Mt. Meru right from your seat!

I can not recommend a visit to the Cultural Arts Center highly enough. A very, very inexpensive addition to your trip will create memories as wonderful as all the other activities you've experienced in Tanzania.

And ... do not forget your camera!
