We attended a taping of the NPR program, "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me . . . " at the Studebaker Theater in the Fine Arts Building. The Theater has a small venue vibe, but seats about 700 people. The architecture of the building and the theater are gorgeous, displaying old-world craftsmanship that is no longer seen in today's structures. The intricate details of the carvings and inlays are a feast for the eyes.
There was a small concession stand set up during our visit. I do not know if it was part of the Theater or part of the NPR presentation, but the pricing was rather high. Our group purchased 3 waters (2 still, 1 sparkling), 2 candy bars, and 1 bag of chips. Even allowing for the fact that the 2 still waters came in reusable metal bottles, our meager purchases set us back $32 after leaving a small tip.
Two of the three members of our party used the restrooms during our visit. There are two single-stall, ADA-compliant restrooms on the same level as the theater, but the main restrooms are located in the basement of the building underneath the theater. Due to the limited restroom facilities on the main level, the wait to use them was rather long. This may be a challenge for visitors that cannot access the basement restrooms due to mobility limitations. The two members of our party that used the restrooms did go to the basement, and one person reported that the stairs were slightly steeper than most stairways being installed today.
The performance we attended was fantastic, although that is more a function of the presenting group than the theater itself. While our experience with this venue is limited, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We look forward to returning to experience some of the other activities that take place in the building, not just in the theater.

We saw the show, Undertale Live, at the Studebaker Theatre inside the Fine Arts building in January, 2020. We were seeing a Saturday evening show, so we booked a room overnight at the Congress Plaza hotel, less than a block away. I don't want to say too much here about the hotel, since it really isn't relevant to the Fine Arts Building, but in short, it's a historic old place that we love - faded grandeur to be sure, but great rates right on Grant Park in Chicago, plus we like its quirky and somewhat gritty character.
Anyway, the weather was not nice that day at all. Angry high waves had been crashing up under snowy gray skies along the lakefront all day, and we were glad to be settled for the night very close to the theatre rather than having to face driving back out to the suburbs afterward.
Inside the Fine Arts Building, the Studebaker offered a lot of what I like about the Congress. It's an old theater, which has been updated enough to bring it back into use a few years ago, but not enough to look like a brand-new, boring, ultra chic sort of place. When my kiddo told me about this show, a lot of the best seats had already been booked, but I was able to get front row balcony way off to one side - a good choice for us, since she and I are both of petite height and often end up with heads blocking our views. During the show, some sort of control board was set up right in front of us that almost, but not quite, blocked part of our view.
I'm giving this venue 5 owl eyes simply because it's there, it's open, and someone is lovingly trying to run it as a going concern. That can't be an easy equation in expensive Chicago. With about 700 seats, you are not far from the action no matter where you sit, a relatively intimate and comfortable space to hold a moderate size performance.
As I write this we are in the throes of the COVID stay-at-home order, so I can only hope that performances will resume in privately owned theaters like this one afterward.

The Fine Arts Building (also called the Studebaker Building) is located on South Michigan Avenue across from Grant Park. It was built for the Studebaker Company in 1885. Today the building houses artists' lofts, art galleries, theater, dance and recording studios and other businesses associated with the arts.

シカゴに滞在中こちらのビルを訪れました。バッキンガム噴水のあたりからミシガン通りを渡った向かい側に位置する歴史を感じる美しいビルです。音楽や美術など芸術関係のテナントが多く入っています。

I wanted my daughter and grandchildren to see the beauty of the vintage buildings. The Fine Arts was the first that entered my mind with the old "manual" operated elevators. Although the courtyard isn't as grand as the past, it was still a relaxing place to take in all we experienced (galleries, music, dance, recording, readying the Studebaker theater), within the building.

I totally stumbled on this building. Even at 9:30 AM on a Sunday morning there are people inside practicing their music. Lovely architecture.

The 10-story Fine Arts Building, also known as the Studebaker Building, houses artists' lofts, art galleries, theatre, dance and recording studios, interior and web design firms, musical instrument makers and other businesses associated with the arts. It also is home to the Studebaker Theatre and the Artists Cafe and offices of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the Grant Park Conservancy, the World Federalist Associations and the Chicago Youth Symphony. Located at 410 South Michigan Avenue, across the street from Grant Park in the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District, the Fine Arts Building was constructed in 1894-1895 and extensively remodeled in 1898 when the top three floors were added. The two granite columns at the main entrance, each three feet eight inches in diameter and 12 feet 10 inches tall were said to be the largest polished monolithic shafts in the country. The interior features Art Nouveau motifs and murals by artists such as Martha Susan Baker, Frederic Clay Bartlett, Olivet Dennett Grover, Frank Xavier Leyendecker and Bertha Sophia Menzler-Peyton and date from the 1898 renovation. In 1931, Paul Whiteman and his orchestra gave the first public performance of Grand Canyon Suite at the Studebaker Theatre. Since 2016, it has served as a live theater with a 740 seating capacity. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 1978.

Our group of 15 student musicians spent a day in this beautiful building. It is alive with music and creativity and walking through the spaces you wish that the walls could speak, what stories they would have. Lots of photo opportunities and architectural/design curiosities. The ancient elevators have a human operator which felt like a Film Noir movie set. Check out this wonderful building.

So glad they are taking care of this building. Definitely worth a look and it is open to the public 7 days a week.. It is worth exploring the floors ( going on the historic elevator) because each one has something interesting going on- especially the violin maker.. I had lunch at the café in front- kind of a mediocre salad ( eggplant and a lot of lettuce) but they had good coffee!

The beautiful Studebaker Theater was built in 1885 housing and selling the Studebaker carriage. The large picture windows in the front displayed the new vehicles which were produced on the 6th floor. I had to see this gem. Luckily, my professional ballerina daughter had a big performance there and I arrived early to peruse each floor.
Uniquely, this building has the oldest continuously manually operating elevator in Illinois. You press the button to call the car, and soon the door opens to reveal a person asking what floor you request. Exquisite. We took the car to the 10th floor and walked down.
Each floor had a personality of its own. A violin maker, yoga studio, architects, record store, sculptures, glass makers, too many to name. Though the building needs some repair, I couldn't help but see past that to focus on the beauty of the craftmanship, material and creativity of the buidling and the art it contains. Highly recommend seeing this beauty for yourself.
