I went in 2021 so don't judge me. It was fun. The food was amazing. We sat at the last car. The views were also amazing too. It took us to a historical museum.

Great family experience! There were 15 of us & everyone enjoyed our ride on the Polar Express! Ages ranged from 6 to senior.

The Polar Express train was fun. There was some confusion among many passengers on the platform about how the boarding process worked (plus it was raining which may have added to some folks’ stress). We were in the lounge car, which we enjoyed. We had comfortable reserved seats in the nicely decorated car. Once it got started, it seemed like the children in our car all had a fun time. I heard no crying or grumbling! They were cute in their pajamas, too. The employees tried hard to entertain everyone, the hot chocolate was good, and Santa was gracious and fun to kids and adults alike. Ride took an hour or so. I had my worries given some of the negative reviews I’d seen, but it was fine. Some people cannot be pleased, not matter what. We enjoyed it and would recommend for a different sort of holiday-spirit-creating afternoon outing, especially for families with young kids (note: there were all kinds of passengers, including couples-young and older— without kids and teenagers that were part of larger family groups).

Unorganized chaos while boarding. There were signs but people weren't paying attention and bombarding the train. The conductor had to repeat himself several times for patrons to get in the correct line. It was like herding cattle.
There's nothing to look at. I thought there would be lights/decorations. There's lights at the "North Pole" but you can only see them if you're on the right side of the train. Also, there is no heat so the windows were fogged up. So you wouldn't be able to see anything if there were lights to see. The activities on the train were mediocre. During the story, someone walks by with a book showing the photos, the hot chocolate was gross, and the Santa experience was meh. Luckily my son enjoyed himself so that's all that matters at the end of the day but I would recommend to not have high expectations for the experience.

After going to the Polar Express in Elkins, WV, for several years, I was excited to find the Polar Express a little closer to home in Cumberland. However, the experience was disappointing. In Elkins, we had musical performances, elves that provided the kids constant fun including magic, and unlimited yummy hot chocolate. Western MD Scenic RR should learn from Elkins. This was a barebones Polar Express experience. The cocoa was watered down and not refilled, the elves didn't do much but walk the aisles jingling bells, and the entertainment was just recorded music over the speakers. It felt as if Cumberland was doing the bare minimum for the Polar Express. We understand that we were spoiled by the superb rendition of the Polar Express in Elkins, but if Elkins could do it then I certainly think Cumberland has the thespian community to take the Polar Express over the top. They also need to consider better timing of the trains too. It was utter confusion on the platform as no one was using a microphone or megaphone to direct folks to the right doors, and we waited nearly a half hour to board. Possibly adding a half hour between trains would allow the train to turn over without the kids watching the elves clean the tables and watch the hot chocolate being carried on board.

Spectacular excursion to view fall foliage from an open car on a vintage train pulled by the largest operating steam engine in the USA. 4 1/2 hour trip included lunch stop in Frostburg.
Historic western Maryland has many other attractions such as bike trail riding.

Planned a getaway birthday weekend for my husband. Seeing/riding the 1309 was on his bucket list. I specifically booked our ride for a Saturday in October as the website stated the 1309 would run ALL Saturdays in October. When the train pulled up we were quickly disappointed to see a diesel train. The overall experience was fine and similar to most other scenic rail excursions we have done. Our only complaint is that we planned our entire trip around the 1309 and felt our weekend was somewhat wasted.

Some windows were clear but some were almost completely blurry. For a scenic ride, more attention should be paid to the windows. There was no shuttle in Frostburg and going up the stairs and hill to get to the town was not an option for us. However, there was a nice little concession area offering burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, and ice cream. Also enjoyed the carriage museum. Gift shop was pricey but all money received helps support the railroad. Trees were just starting to color up for Fall and a few beautiful scenes of mountains & farms along the way.

I purchased dome tickets for the Frostburg Flyer had to reschedule once, because steam was taken out of service in September. The train itself was an amazing site and the seats were comfortable, however for the price we paid for the dome seats, I was disappointed because the glass above us was broken and hasn't been fixed so we couldn't see out of the dome, not a lot of appetizers and 90 minutes is not enough time to find a place to eat and get back to train. Also, didn't realize that the steam engine didn't take us back so our view as quite limited we couldn't really see anything. Not sure we will do it again.

My husband and I and two other couples drove 2 hours to Cumberland to take the train to Frostburg. None of us are train enthusiasts but thought it would be something different to do. It was a nice time. The ride took 90 minutes to and from with 90 minutes to spend in Frostburg. We ate at The Toasted Goat. It is an uphill walk the whole way to the restaurant. Several mention it’s uphill to the town but it continues to be an uphill walk once u get in the town. Definitely doable if your in semi descent shape. If not you can take the shuttle. The food was good there. We called ahead to see if we needed a reservation, which u don’t, but they advise u let them know your on the train and they have a separate quick order menu. We used the regular menu and still had enough time to eat and walk both directions. Overall a nice day but something we personally would not feel the need to do again.

We sat in the same seats for both legs of the trip and had the best views. When boarding in Cumberland, choose seats on the station side. Enjoy!

My wife & I both have drop handle, skinny tire, road bikes. Is the bike trail paved from top to bottom?
What type of pavement is it? Thanks....

Will the weekend of the 22nd be too late for peak fall foilage? I am reading several different answers. I have looked at all the predictions and it seems OK, however I am reading different opinions. Is there anyone who actually lives in the area who could answer, please? I have a cabin reserved at Rocky Gap for that weekend. Need to know if I should cancel. Thanks!

Cyclist like using the train there were a number of them on the train the day we took the ride. It is family friendly just long enough to entertain and relax before the ride back down the hill “lol”!

Thanks KA for that review, it was helpful to me. I'm thinking of taking our 5 year old granddaughter on this train & was wondering if they allow for people to bring a picnic lunch instead of buying their own food. I'd like to plan on picnicking at the stop in Frostburg, but there's nothing on the train website that tells me what time they stop there or whether bringing food along is allowed. Thanks ahead of time for your reply!

Yes you can bring a picnic lunch. I saw a family bring their picnic basket and I thought it was a great idea. I don’t know if you can eat your own food but my daughter and I brought our own bottled drinks with no issues. We were in the dining car. I agree with the others walking into main street Frostburg probably not fun for your small granddaughter.
Hope this was helpful.
