After a very heavy rain, my wife and I walked about two miles (round trip) on the tow path at the Cumberland end. The path was pretty wet, with some very large puddles, but the views of Cumberland as we walked were pretty scenic. A good place to get some exercise and enjoy the scenery.

Tony and I was driving towards Fort Frederick State Park from having lunch. We saw sign for C&O Canal Lock Dam#5 and Lockhouse. On the other side of Potomac River is WV

It's a free park to enjoy for viewing scenery! There is plenty of parking. Free to enjoy! People were there hiking, biking, fishing...I guess you can swim there is no signage saying you can't. Only a sign saying no alcohol

It's a beautiful area with Great open river views! Highly Recommend

Biked around 8 miles out then back around Oldtown just before Memorial Day, separate review of Paw Paw tunnel area. The towpath was wet in spots and is best for a hybrid or mountain bike, though a road bike probably would be OK. Great contrast with the very smooth Great Allegheny Passage with which this trail connects in Cumberland. Interesting remnants of the canal are near the path. One section contained a series of beaver dams that kept water in the canal prism and the water was coated with green from floating algae and aquatic plants. In this verdant year everything was green including the water.

There are several interesting, preserved locks along the way. Some 1800's (?) buildings near locks are also preserved. This is worth visiting for the history and the workout on foot or bike using the old towpath. Sad that the Paw Paw Tunnel work interrupts the biking flow.

Great place to hang out and relax or take a walk. There is a playground that my toddlers enjoyed playing on. There are also shops/restaurants to enjoy and a replica of a canal boat.

This location marks the end of the C&O canal towpath. Extending from DC for 184.5 miles, this spot is it.
The museum located at this site (closed due to COVID) has accompanying outdoor info placards, maps, trails, and sites. All of these are free and food for all ages. Around the outside of the building, there are multiple signs that explain the history of the C&O and identify key landmarks between Cumberland and DC.
Most notably (as eluded to) a massive 184.5 mile double-wide trail begins (or ends) at this site. Maps abound that illuminate key sites along this route. As you depart the museum, you can pick-up the trail and find 3 major sites within a ~1.0 mile walk south along the towpath. These include the trail start & bronze emblem (immediately outside the museum due south), a canalboat mock up (within 400 meters), the canal itself (within 600 meters due south), and one of the locks (approx 1 mile south). The towpath itself has landmarks along its entirety and has mile markers indicating where you are located.
Definitely one of the highlights of Cumberland if you like outdoors and history. And if you like free!

Near the downtown exit of the freeway, we parked in a coin lot to the east of Parkview Liquor Store, under the freeway, and walked 1 block east to George Washington's HDQ. The small log house built in 1755 had information boards in front and just to the side was a memorial to the National Road with the Zero Marker stone nearby. A pathway to the south led to an overlook of the Potomac River and its broad Roller Dam. From here, a pedestrian bridge crossed the tracks to the Cumberland Station/Visitor Center and just to the south, a peek to Lock # 8 of the C&O Canal.
So much history in a one block area for 4 quarters parking in the shade.

Really enjoyed visiting here and walking the property. Unfortunately was short lived a huge storm came in and we had to leave. Would love to visit again what a beautiful town. I'm not one of those people that get scared easy but be careful straying far away from here under the bridges were shady characters I felt really uncomfortable and not safe. Shouldn't take away the sheer beauty of this area tho just be careful.

Riding off road biking is a challenge; abundant foliage promotes "forest bathing" Turkeys & chipmunks kept us company.

This small museum gives a nice overview of the canal system that helped our country to grow and expand. I especially appreciated the discussion of mules, that enabled the canals to operate in the first place. I visited a few places up in New York state that profiled their canal system, but the animals were never discussed in as much depth as this museum. In addition you can get a National Park stamp, and also a number of travel brochures. As it's right next to the train station, you'll have no problems finding this. Free parking is available, with just a few minutes' walk. The complex this attraciton is located in is very nicely done; I saw no litter, and the brick paving makes it very welcoming. The next time we're in Cumberland we'll definitely be paying another visit.
