This was an interesting spot to visit, but nearby parking is non-existent. The current location is not the original location.

It was cool! Neat local and American history. Great for an afternoon ramble.
In addition to signs, there was an audio description with added information that you could listen to by pushing a button near each of the signs. The button on the sign a few feet away from the house (which was wheelchair accessible) shared the same information as the button on the porch of the house (which was not wheelchair accessible). The audio was multiple minutes worth of information - definitely worth listening to - don’t just read the sign and leave!

I was excited to visit. I have been to Mount Vernon, am interested in the French and Indian war and have been to similar era Forts in Western PA. The house itself was not open but interesting nonetheless. There was a button to push that sounded a tape about the history of the cabin and several interesting plaques to read. The inside was set up to show a nice scene from the time period.
We walked around the cabin to look at the back. Up against it was a place on the ground where a homeless person had clearly been camped. Blankets, change of clothes and some bags of things were all that remained but it is not what one expects to see next to an important piece of American history.
We continued down the trail and passed a homeless guy who may have been the owner of the sleeping place we found. He asked us for money.
Then we walked to the next marker with a pleasant overlook. There was a woman who appeared dead on the bench and her body was contorted in a strange position. The (high) guy next to her nudged her and she moved (though she didn’t regain consciousness) so we were relieved to see she was alive.
I have worked for non profits for the last 25 years and have dealt with many homeless and drug addicted people over the years. Even I began to feel very unsafe. We left.
We only spent the day in Cumberland but it was very apparent to me that they have a serious homeless issue. As someone who works in the field, it doesn’t seem like they are very educated on the best practices in dealing with homelessness.
There are ways of helping people that are not enabling and help people who want help to rise out of their current situation while identifying chronic homeless who do not want to be out of the situation and saying “you might not want to change, but you can’t hang out here and destroy our town”.
Sadly, Cumberland is not using those techniques and the chronic homeless are destroying this national landmark.

George Washington's Headquaters were used as his command post as commander of the Virginia troops during the French and Indian War. It's a very small cabin, yet it gives you a peak into the past. Right across the river from the Western Maryland Railway Station.

This log cabin was built during the Indian and French war for George Washington to use as his his command post. The original site is on top of the hill near the Courthouse. It was moved to the current location as part of the Fort Cumberland walking trail. Good to see and read about history but you will not miss much if no time for the site.

We were traveling back to Ohio and made a pit stop in Cumberland to stretch our legs.
Googled what was around and stopped here to check it out.
It’s a little cabin, door was locked and no attendant around.
There’s a statue of George in the window along with a few artifacts.
There’s a little park it’s in with a few plaques and monuments around.
You’ll see the whole thing in less than 5 minutes, and you will pass it up if your not searching for it.
Felt good just to get out of car for a moment.

"Headquarters" is simply a recently made building representing a historic site, even if it existed in the first place. The Joshua Fry plaque is in need of paint.

This was apart of the C & O trail and we walked the whole thing. It was okay. I can't say it was that spectacular but we enjoyed the history associated with it.

A bit of our country's history. We were in Cumberland to ride the train and took a walk around this picturesque town.
