My husband bought me tickets to see Jay Leno for my birthday. We arrived to see several beautiful vintage cars out front which was fun to see. I’ve seen many comics at many venues so was expecting a fun night and sometimes the warm up comics are better. Not for this show. There was no warm up comic. It was a woman with a guitar who basically mumbled between songs stating she was a happy person but played extremely DEPRESSING songs. One was about hating Mondays and Sunday’s, next something about being shut in, another about the nameless murdered people on crime tv shows who never get found or something to that affect. A gentleman in my row said he didn’t pay to be depressed. The performer even joking said that at least no was was throwing food at her yet and a woman in my row shouted THERE’S STILL TIME. When she finally finished she just unplugged her guitar and walked off stage then the lights came up. No saying thank you or introducing Jay Leno. Everyone sat and looked around in bewilderment. I said to my husband at this point jokingly “ whatever you paid it was too much”. I guess it can only go up from here
Why was this person booked??? Was it a favor to some family member???
I feel bad for Jay Leno that he had to follow that performance.
Our disappointment continued as we parked across the street at the hotel valet parking for the public only to find out that they should have told us we could request our car I guess on an app on our phone so for 15 minutes we watched lots of people were walking up and getting their cars immediately. Finally the woman who checked our car to begin with helped us only to find out they lost my car. No one admitted they parked it. It took over half hour for them to locate it.
The night as a whole a give 3 stars and it’s only because Jay Leno was ok.

We had a wonderful time seeing the oldies show. Rosie treated for my birthday. Staff very friendly and the place is beautiful. Gary Pukett..Gary Lewis..Brooklyn Bridge and Grass Roots. Sold out show. At 75 I felt like a baby in that crowd. We stayed at the hotel right across the street.
But...18 bucks for a stale pretzel and a soda????

We went to see the amazing Zurich chamber orchestra here in the State theater. This is a place they have been trying to keep alive since I was in college here in the 1970s. The place looks great. Despite all of their terrific efforts they still are penny pinching with no program, can you imagaine not getting a program on Broadway? Anywho, a QR code was shown from above to be "environmentally friendly" aka save alot of money. This is yet another venue that doesn't turn off the overhead lights for a performance--I think I'm used to it. The old farts sitting by us complained all thru the show. Parking was fine just a few blocks away. Wine was $16/ glass, beer in a can, $10, welcome to the small city.

The State Theatre holds their patron’s money hostage. A CATS performance had been postponed from May 8th-10th and the State Theatre still refuses refunds. All other Shows {numerous } that were cancelled or rescheduled Patrons were given the option of a refund or accepting the new date.
They are still “deciding” what to do with the CATS shows. They won’t even consider a refund now and making people wait on them. Shameful

I took advantage of a NJ Symphony Orchestra sale to purchase tickets for a classical music concert at the State Theatre. Normally we attend NJSO concerts at the Mayo in Morristown or NJPAC in Newark; both of those theatres are comfortable with good acoustics, especially from the mezzazines/tiers where the tickets are less expensive. Our State Theatre seats were high on the mezzazine, accessible only by stairs. There was a very deep overhang which muffled the orchestra and singers but weirdly amplified the constant conversation of people seats away in the same row as ours. We looked to the usher to quiet them, but she was focused on scanning the seats for people who were moving closer to the stage and communicating with other ushers to intercept them. During intermission we explained how the acoustics were miserable from where we sat and politely asked her if we could move; she refused, saying that people paid more for those seats. We observed that there were MANY empty seats lower down, but she was adamant. Later, during the concert's 2nd half, she swooped down on an attendee who had moved closer and made him go back to the mezzazine, which created a distraction from the music. Given the bad acoustics, dated "circa 1970's" decor, hassle looking and paying for parking, and the longish drive, we don't plan on ever coming back to the State Theatre. Disappointing.

This theatre is horrible for larger size people, the seats are not conducive to even sit in. My mom and I went to see James Galway as he is one of my favorite performers and I couldn’t even sit in the seat. I ended up out in the lobby for the performance crying. And NO ONE even approached me to see if I was ok. I was too embarrassed to say anything but maybe I would have if prompted. In a country where obesity has been on the rise for years this is so unacceptable. They just had a remake from what I understood and the seats were horrible. If you are a plus size person, do not waste your money.

Comparing it to the Count Basie in Red Bank, the building is just as beautiful. The seating is more comfortable with better leg room (I am 6 ft tall). Usher staff is friendly. Nice comfortable atmosphere. There are numerous (although not free) parking options within a few blocks walk. Tons of dining options.

We went to see a Dream Theater concert last weekend. We sat in the balcony and I don't think this theater has any bad seats! The sound was incredible. There is nothing like a good old fashioned acoustic theatre to enjoy your favorite band or singer.

From the Newe Brunswick train station it would be about a 15 minute walk. Just go downAlbany Street too the corner of George, Turn right and then walk about 7 city blocks until you come to the intersection with Livingston Ave. Make a right and you will see the Theater Marquee about 500 yards ahead. But there are also plenty of cabs at the train station if the weather is cold or damp. It is actually a nice walk. You will pass Starbucks, some nice bars, a couple of good eating establishment, /dunkin Doughnuts and a great pizza place. Once you turn right on Livingston you will pass the George Street Playhouse and the City Monument Square

I honestly do not remember who performed. Usually in Nov and December they have various holiday performances.

Street parking if you can find it. I always park at the nearby parking garages. Both are about a block or 2 away. The one I park at is $13 paid at the theater prior to the start of the event. Check the State Theaters website for parking options and maps.

There is a $5 indoor parking for the theater, located just around the corner.
It has easy access to the front of theater on Livingston Ave. There are signs directing to the parking building.

How bad are the steps up to the Gallery? I have a meniscus tear and I'm wondering if the steps will be too much for me?

I had seats on the floor, so didn't use them, but they looked like your standard B'way theater stairs. I wouldn't chance it

What Resturants are within walking distance of this theater.
Rédigé le 16 janvier 2015
Downtown New Brunswick is right there. I would say that just about any restaurant you google will be within a block or two of the theater. Try The Frog and The Peach or The Old Bay Restaurant. Both very good. About two blocks away.
