What a hidden little gem of a museum. It is housed in the campus of the college, and not well marked to get to - but very worth it! Park, walk up the hill and to the left 😂
It’s a donation type museum, well organized inside and offers paid tours if interested. There is something for everyone who is interested in geology, paleontology and science. Check it out!

I can’t review the actual Museum of Geology in Rapid City as I could not find the Museum of Geology.
I followed Apple Maps which is usually right on. I would up driving into a construction zone on the campus with no way out. I entered the address again and where the Museum should have been was an open, grassy area. I drove around again and could not find the right building or any signage to help find the building with all the construction going on. The website just gave an error that the page couldn’t be found. I’m normally good at finding my way around but this one stumped me.
If you’re planning a visit, do even more research than I did to try and find out the way through the construction maze to find the Museum. I bet it’s really cool!

We are so sorry you were unable to find us. There is a lot of construction on SD Mines campus at the moment. Since you were running into it, you would have been in the right area. We are located on the third floor of the O'Harra Building (which is located next to the new construction).
The best way to reach us at the moment it to approach us from the football stadium and follow the signs and footprints up to the building.
The other issue is that over the summer break, the IT department is completely revamping the entire school website, which accounts for the broken website links. We do hope to have that up again soon. Again, we apologize for all of this.

I loved this place! The bones! The rocks! Seriously, I learned more here about how all of the pieces of the various eras occurred - when South Dakota was an inland sea, how the ice age impacted the various animals and wildlife, and how we ultimately ended up where we are geologically than any of the other places I visited. While a relatively small space on the SDU campus, it managed to display its dinosaurs, other fossils, and rocks in a way that made sense and allowed the amateur to follow along the course of geological history very well.

We visited here as part of a two-week-long road trip from our home in southeastern PA to the Dakotas in the summer of 2023; this was an interesting museum located at the SD School of Mines & Technology. Visitor parking spots were provided just outside the museum entrance, and admission was free. We enjoy viewing gems and minerals, and there were many beautiful examples here; we liked how the different varieties were grouped together by type. Display cases featured informative, easy-to-read descriptive signs. There were also fossils and skeletons on display. In all, we spent just under one hour here and were glad we stopped by.

Free admission! A free and excellent museum. Part of the fun for my family was seeing the states where the fossils were found and it any were from our state (there were a few). A vast display of fossils and rocks from around the world. The black light room with "glowing" rocks/minerals was entertaining. The gift shop had nice items. Be sure to check out the flexing sandstone on the wall in the children's play area.

My husband is a Rockhound and really appreciated the mineral display. My four year old grandson enjoyed the dinosaurs. There is a small children’s activity area. And the museum is FREE which is great!

Feee admission with a suggested donation for entry. My eight year old son loved looking at the dinosaur fossils and minerals. Don’t miss the room of fluorescent minerals off to the side.

Went with daughter and her husband and their 4 children ages 5 to 9. The little ones enjoyed the fossils and one in particular found the various rocks fascinating. Had been to other sites in the area and Grandpa (me) opted to take a little nap in a chair. My grandchildren thought that was funny. However, I did get to see everything that they wanted me to see. No one was disappointed. Donations to the museum are suggested. If you have a family member interested in all kinds of rocks, you should make this a stop on your trip.
