Rode this trail in the fall. We were surprised at the poor shape the trail was in. In is crushed limestone to begin with, which isn't great, but there were so many bumps and holes in the trail which made it even worse. There were a few miles of riding on a washboard type area.
The tunnels were wet, dark and not enjoyable at all.
There were few places available or open along the trail route to get snacks or drinks.
Absolutely would never go here again. Many other trail systems that are much nicer.

My family did a bike ride from Sparta to Norwalk (22 miles round trip). We had family with us who flew to visit so they rented bikes from Speeds in Sparta. This was a great option- the owner there was great and he had really nice bikes (Specialized brand). We were also able to buy our trail passes at Speeds. This section of the trail went through one tunnel. That was for sure the highlight! Take a bike light or a flashlight. The tunnel was very dark! We biked the morning after a big storm rolled through and on our way to Norwalk we encountered several downed trees we had to navigate over, and our trip back just a couple hours later and they were all cleaned up! We were impressed at how quickly the trail was maintained. We ate lunch at a restaurant on the trail in Norwalk. Overall this was a super fun family outing. If you don't want to travel with bikes, check out renting at Speeds in Sparta.

Interesting history. Trail is crushed limestone. Started in Sparta and rode generally uphill to the first tunnel (I think it was called Tunnel #3). Cool small towns along the way.

Four of us had a wonderful ride this afternoon, out and back from Sparta to just short of Wilton. Fall colors in abundance, trail in good shape, a smattering of other riders, all very courteous and friendly. Kudos of good maintenance on pit stop facilities in Norwalk, and also in the depot in Sparta. However...I had to do a double-take to be sure--despite the clear sign on the door coming in requiring mask-wearing, the staff person at the counter/desk just inside the door was unmasked during the ten minutes I was in there using the facilities, and also unmasked later in the afternoon when my wife went in before we left. There was a plexi sneeze guard between her and people who might be coming in and out, but I don't think that's sufficient, since she seems to be basically working in there all day, in a relatively small space, contributing to whatever is floating around in the contained, indoor air.

My adult daughter and I started from the Sparta Chamber of Commerce parking lots. There is plenty of room there for parking and restroom facilities. It was approximately 8 miles to Tunnel 3. Tunnel 3 is a must see, but be prepared to get wet and don't forget your flashlight. I am sure it depends on the time of year, but there was lots of water dripping from the ceiling and flowing down the sides in the tunnel. Tunnel 3 is 3/4 of a mile long and took us 20-25 minutes to walk through. You are not allowed to bike in the tunnels. There were not a lot of people there at the time we went (11 a.m.), but I am sure this could get crowded and take more time. We then biked on to Tunnel 2, which was 15 miles from the Sparta Chamber of Commerce. Tunnel 2 is 1/4 mile long and not near as wet inside. There is a small town called Norwalk in between Tunnel 3 and Tunnel 2, which also had a parking lot. Tunnel 3 from Norwalk is approximately 2 miles and would be very doable for walking and small children on bikes. There was a small store, plus rest area. Round trip from the Sparta Chamber of Commerce thru Tunnel 2 and back took us 4 hours at a leisurely pace. I would recommend starting from Norwalk if you do not want such a long adventure. Seeing Tunnel 3 is a must see, but be prepared to get wet and remember your flashlight.

Great bike ride from Sparta through tunnels 3 and 2. Ate at a nice little Mexican stand. Trails were well maintained. 2nd day started from Elroy north. Trail not as well maintained and bridge was out about 3 miles north of Elroy.

Started going this summer! It has become me and my best friends favorite place to hike! Absolutely gorgeous and the area on the way near Sparta is filled with beautiful hills!

Cycled this trail last week and found that it has not been repaired from the damage it received from floods in the spring. Parts of it are closed. In one place (before Kendall) you could walk around the barrier and skirt the edge of a washed out bit, but in other parts the trail was so bad that we had to walk our bikes for miles. The worst parts are between Kendall and Elroy and Wonewoc and LaValle. The tunnels (between Sparta and Kendall) are cool though.

There are some hills but all not too bad. The scenery and tunnels are fantastic. Bring flashlights or headlamps for the tunnels.

Enjoyed the trail! They’ve had a lot of rain so parts of the trail were washed out but we could still walk our bikes through it. Only two spots like that in between Kendall and Wilton. Loved walking through the tunnels. Bring your flashlight for all three tunnels and your raincoat for tunnel #3:).
