I knew everything was shut down but I just wanted to take a stroll and take in the natural beauty after reading the history behind the land. Mother Nature truly is bringing this land back to it's natural state.

Great place to start ones visit to the Reserve. We stopped off and got advice on hike and canoeing in the Kickapoo Valley. They run a video on the history of the Kickapoo reserve which is quite interesting, especially for history and enviromental enthusiasts. Recommend a walk (or drive) over to the top of the dam ( never completed) for a good view of the site. Hike, Bike and canoe the reserve.

The history of the Kickapoo Valley is fascinating, but largely unknown to most people -- including even many living in the area. The Reserve Visitor Center is a great place to learn of the amazing history and natural features of the valley. A very good introduction to the area, especially if you're planning to spend some time canoeing, camping, horseback riding, hiking or other activities. Definitely worth a stop!

We came here for a picnic, and it was a bit cloudy, so we sat on the Patio of the Visitor Center. It stopped drizzling and the four of us had a nice quiet relaxing picnic while watching the birds.
After the picnic, we took one of the paths down to the creek and covered bridge. I loved walking on the stepping stones to cross the creek. Very easy walking and very scenic.

Many great trails here year round. The Evergreen trail was beautiful. They also offer equine, flat tire and cross country skiing.

We were in the Kickapoo Valley area in the end of June when it was wicked hot. We stopped in here to just get a little idea of the are and were pleasantly surprised at how nice this place is. They had a little
Gift shop, viewing area classroom space and a really well done display area with information about the history of the Reserve. If you are in the area definitely come see this place especially if you have kids that you want to have learn a bit about the area.

The Center is a helpful first stop for visitors new to the Kickapoo Valley. The building and parking lots are on the west side of Hwy 131 just north of LaFarge.

We checked out the Center as we began a weeklong driving tour of Vernon County Driftless area. The Center had brochures to supplement our plans and the person behind the counter, had helpful suggestions for navigating the area. When we arrived on a Monday, she was really helpful finding a dining place for us on a closed night for many local restaurants.

The Center itself is new, bright, clean and open year round. It houses a small gift shop and has a nice geologic display about what makes the Valley unique to Wisconsin topography – HINT: it wasn’t sheared off by a mile-high glacier like the rest of us. It also explains hows the reserve was created in the first place. A back deck, not used the day we were there because the season was quickly turning from autumn to not-autumn, overlooks and leads down to a trail system that winds up and down the Valley. A fee is charged for trail access.

In another part of the building, classrooms house a lecture series that brings in locals as well as visitors. These are sponsored by UW-Madison and the Kickapool Nuzum Fund. A lecture was scheduled the week we were there, but we did not make it back. Outdoor events are also planned throughout the year using the Center as a base. Check the website to see what is happening when you tour the area.

The reserve and the visitor's center are awesome! The KVR is quite a natural preserve with flora and fauna every where you turn. It's a place to spend an hour, a day or a week...lots of things to do and see if you are into nature. Perfect place to take the kids to show them something other than television or Xbox. Check ahead to see if there are any special programs as they are worth the time.

The visitors center has an informational area telling about the whole area and how it came to be. This was very interesting. There's a short trail to walk on the grounds. The attendant was very helpful, telling us different trails in the area to walk.
