The staff was amazing, knowledgeable and friendly. The bears were out in the open of their respected areas. Toby is fun to watch.

Don’t subscribe to animal cruelty, and I am not saying this is a cruel practice per se, and it is well intentioned but it’s like visiting a zoo, nothing more, nothing less. The aims are noble , but misguided in my opinion. One of the bears, swaying from side to side exhibited all the hall marks of stress. I paid a lot of money to see what’s available in Chester zoo at a fraction of the pro e and without the hype

I'll start by saying that I am not an "animal rights" person. I am an outdoors person, including hunting and fishing.
I visited in September, with a group of friends.
This place is disturbing. Sure, you can see a bear up close. But, the bears are confined in a small shabby area. It's clear that their life is not good. Imagine a person living in a concrete cell and you get the idea.
I could hear people around me commenting about the poor bears. I would agree. It was depressing to see these animals. I would not bring children to this. I would not recommend this.
If you really really want to see a bear in Alaska, there are tour companies who will take you to see bears in the wild. Do that.

Nice to visit for a short time. The location isn't very big so you can see everything in about 30 minutes. There are three viewing areas, five brown bears and two black bears were there when we visited. The bears look to be in good health and well cared for and the location is easily accessible.

The Bears were so much larger in person, truly amazing animals. I am concerned that one of the bears was pacing. It seemed to be in a lot of stress. It was Sept 3rd,2024, at 3:28 pm. The Fortress of the Bear, is truly an amazing place and will return again. thank you

It was awesome being able to see the bears up close and personal.
The more time you spend with them the more their personalities are apparent.

This was a horrible excursion. The facility is worse than a zoo. It’s an old wastewater treatment facility that was converted to a “fortress”. We’re not “tree huggers”, but this was a horrible place for bears. The bears are bored.

Great morning or afternoon trip.
The Sitka bus will almost take you there, then short walk to the site.
Two large concrete tanks from past use in water treatment or sewage treatment have been recycled into bear areas where bears that are thought to not be releasable to the wild are kept. Bears can be viewed on an elevated platform or at ground level. There are quite robust glass windows keeping you safe at ground levels. The tanks have areas for the bears to sleep in as well as swim. Sometimes the bears will roughhouse with each other. Stories of how the bears came to the shelter are presented and it’s all well done. Next door is “The Shed”, which provides snack food, hot dogs, etc to eat while waiting for the bus to come back. Much more interesting than seeing bears in zoos, and safer than seeing them in the wild.
Leave the bear spray at home.
Open seasonally.

This is must visit in Sika! Amazing to see the interface with the bears and their trainers. Who would have known that bears can sign language with mankind?! As the owner said - they are very smart. And playful and adoring with personalities. Never saw something like this in a zoo. Pay the small admission price as it is well worth it (we got retired military rate). And your money goes to a great cause to save the lives of the orphaned cubs.

Came here as part of an Alaskan cruise. Came on our own, not part of a boat excursion. We loved it! This was one of the highlights of our trip. The workers were soooo knowledgeable. Loved learning about the different personalities of the bears. Really enjoyed our time here.

We are a group of 8 adults, 6 of us are seniors.... very senior. Our 90 year mom is in a wheelchair. We will be on the NCL ship, the Bliss. What would be the best way to get to you from the ship since we will have a wheelchair and she cannot do steps.
Rédigé le 30 janvier 2023
I recommend you contact Baranof Tours in Sitka. Since you have a group of 8, you should be able to do a private tour. When we used them from the Bliss, they picked us up at the pier and dropped us off right in the parking lot of the Fortress of the Bears. Our tour also included stops at the Alaska Raptor Center and the Sitka National Totem Park. I believe all places would be able to accommodate a wheelchair. Their van held 12 passengers so with 8, the wheelchair will easily fit provided it's a regular wheelchair and not a motorized chair. The only issue will be time, but you will certainly be able to do 2 of the 3. Note: If you're looking for a tour in Ketchikan recommend you contact Wild Wolf Tours.

We will be in sitka on July 19. do we need advance reservations. We will be arriving by cruise ship
Rédigé le 22 juin 2022
Hi we also arrive by cruise ship my recommendation is to take the free cruise shuttle into the centre at the drop-off point you will see some ladies selling tickets for both the bear and raptor tours they were half the price the cruise company wanted. It’s too far to walk there so you’re only other option would be a taxi hope this helps cheers

Hi,
We are taking the royal cruise and will be in Sitka on June 22. What is the best way to get to Fortress of the bear? Is there a shuttle?
Regards,
Murugan
Rédigé le 21 avril 2022
Don't think there is a shuttle but taxi is probably available
Rédigé le 22 avril 2022
How much to enter? Also, would you catch the bus from the cruise dock or once we get into town?
Rédigé le 4 mai 2018
We signed up at the dock for a combo Fortress of the Bears and Eagle Sanctuary bus tour. It was approximately $30 per person. It was a far better deal than any preorder trip on the ship! The guide told us all about the area as he drove.

I understand that the bus runs during the summer. Our ship will be stopping in Sitka mid-Sept. Will the bus still be running or will we need find other transporation ?
Thank you

Hello! You can catch the Blue Line bus out to the Gary Paxton Industrial Park, which is a 3 minute walk from the Fortress of the Bear gates. You can find more information and schedules on their website, simply search on Google for 'Sitka Community Ride'.

We will be on a cruise in late August and are looking forward to visiting! My only concern is how many steps to the platforms do you have? Read where the best viewing is on the platform but interested in knowing how many steps and how steep they are? Are they dry or slippery? Looking forward to your prompt response to my inquiries.
