Rugged beauty at it’s best.

A truly beautiful natural rock pool, accessed through a climb down a coral ravine. Unbelievable colours and fantastic snorkelling experience. Not a huge amount of fish, but as you float on the surface you become aware of more than by first impression. The clarity of the water is unbelievable. Certainly a must if spending a holiday on Niue.

Beautiful reflection of light

I arrived with Niue Orientation Tour, so I din't get to stay long enough. However, the light reflection of very beautiful, so I think it definitely deserve a visit!

A dream

Avaiki cave is one of those places that seems like it could only ever exist in a dream. The water is an impossible shade of turquoise and the walls of the cave shimmer with a jewel-like purple hue. It's breathtaking.

That said, like many places in Niue, it's beauty belies how dangerous it can be.

Come on a low outgoing tide. Rogue waves bounce off the cave walls and can create a washing machine like surge which can result in grazes and cuts from the rocks.

Snorkelling here is average- best snorkelling on Niue is Utuko.

Definitly a must see on Niue.

Was this place real? I still can't believe it... breathtaking. Didnt bring my camera, so will just have to assume it wasn't a dream. Niue is amazing!

"Kings Cave"

Back in Niue history when there is a system of kings to rule the villages, Avaiki cave has two swimming pools. A pool for the servants and a reserve pool for the kings only to have their royal bath. Inside the kings cave are amazing formation of stalactite that look like statues or sculptor to decorate the kings royal bathe cave.

Simply stunning

There are many wonderful places to swim and snorkel in Niue however this is definitely one of the best on the Island, best done at low tide or 2 hours either side and you’ll need reef shoes to get there. Good access to the water and then a bit of a scramble to get around to the pool but well worth the effort.

Feel like a King

I couldn't get used to not walking on a beach to get to the water, very different, but every entry point to the water on Niue is different. This one, like the others, goes down through a cave, but what is on the other side is pretty special. This is where the ancient kings once bathed, and why wouldn't they? Protected from the ocean by a coral reef, protected from the sun by being under the lip of the cave; beautiful clear water, coral and tropical fish. No wonder the kings wanted to keep it for themselves. It is also the site of the first canoe landing. If I landed here after a long sea voyage I reckon I'd stay too. Well worth a visit but wait until low tide.

Still my favourite spot in Niue

This was our second visit to Niue. Avaiki cave and the reef pools were my favourite last trip, and still my favourite spot. We visited the cave and reef pools a few times this visit. You need to walk through the cave and then around the reef rocks on your right. you can go a mid to low tide for the cave. But reef pools out front are only accessible an hour either side of low tide.
Definitely wear reef shoes, take snorkel and mask.

Just nature at its best

Stunning cave pool, must be low tide but well worth the wait. Swam here a couple of times and had different amounts of fish every time. Need to wear reef shoes as the rocks are really sharp. Walk through the cave and head out to your right. Once you have had a swim in the cave and the tide is still out, walk out of cave and head to the right, there is a large pool in the reef which is just amazing to snorkel in - so many fish and the top left corner has almost stairs to help you in and out. This was the best snorkeling we saw so many fish here, just amazing.

These caves are well worth the effort of getting to. Beautiful pink coral, crystal clear water, gorgeous tropical fish seen when snorkeling - magical!
