When touring Lebanon, it would be easy to miss some of the finest wines and arak in the world. Here’s a hidden gem I recommend for those with a discerning palette.

Ok, I hear you…the Bekaa Valley? The Middle East’s breeding ground for terrorism training and drug running? You want us to go THERE for wine?

Let me clear up these myths right now: This ISN’T your father’s Bekaa Valley…

I’ve seen the Bekaa with my own eyes. Home to the finest Greek/Roman archeological site (Baalbeck) in my world, Bekaa has changed quite a bit in the modern Lebanon. The days where stolen cars would be dumped after being ransomed off and the massive hashish trade are long gone. When you enter the Valley, the military checkpoint is welcoming and alerts you of any pitfalls that may await your journey. I called them “the Armed Forces Lonely Planet.”

Fine wine making is a tradition that dates back over 5,000 to the original inhabitants of Lebanon: the Phoenicians. With Byblos, the world’s oldest continuously running seaport a short distance away, tending vineyards and then trading the wine with spice runners were a natural fit. And, the people in Bekaa—then and now—are among the world’s most hospitable.

Now that we’ve cleared this up, let’s get to the good stuff.

Massaya is the continuing incarnation of the pioneering Tanaïl Estate tended by the Ghosn family. Today, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call the sprawling, dramatically-located vineyard the centerpiece of the burgeoning Lebanese wine tourism industry.

On the day I arrived, Sami Ghosn was the king of hospitality treating a few colleagues / friends and me to a tour of the winery while crafting some amazing culinary selections from their Le Relais restaurant where guests normally lounge under the comfort of lush trees and pergolas.

In one of the most glorious dining experiences this side of Italy, Sami and his brother Ramzi—a trained Cordon Blue chef himself—guided their normal staff of housewives from neighboring villages in a finely executed balancing act of blended gastronomy.

Bruschetta, whole bean hummos, grilled eggplant with the signature Massaya soja sauce and pasta with dried anchovy paced a full-throttle menu that retained its equilibrium and old-world personality indigenous to the Bekaa region.

Inside the authentic country kitchen where the meal was being prepared in front of us, the sumptuous glasses of Massaya wines invited easy camaraderie with our new friends.

As a friend of mine would say, “I’m more of a beer man than a wine man,” and I usually would say he’s more a vodka martini guy than a wine guy, but today swayed my bias towards to sweet tastes of Massaya.

The vineyard produces five labels every vintage: one Massaya Rosé, one Massaya blanc and three Massaya rouge (Gold Reserve, Silver Selection and Classic). Each features a fruity, rich blend with remarkably low acidity; a smooth innovative taste that is such to add to unforgettable evenings when you uncork a bottle at home with your guests.

As I sipped my way through the evening, somewhere between mountains and the Mediterranean Seas I felt something stirring. I realized it was my soul connecting to the land. I envisioned the Phoenicians entertaining much the same way. An understated feast with new friends while enjoying the wine that can only be crafted in the special place that Bekaa has become once again.

Stumbled on this amazing place during our trip to Faraya so surprised by the wine never tried it before. Liked it so much we went 3 times there during our 2 weeks holidays. Loved the silver selection red such a shame can’t seem to find it in the U.K.! Did the wine tasting tour & we did try 4 wines. Great decoration everything well thought of! The main restaurant menu is interesting but the output is not consistent across all dishes. Great idea with the sky bar.

We were welcomed into this amazing winery, restaurant, and home as though we were long lost relatives.
The most affable and friendly and pleasant and helpful staff I have encountered in a long time.
Food that was not only original and different for visitors from outside Lebanon, but delicious and delightfully presented.
The wine was excellent and a tour of the winery and the vineyards proved informative and interesting.
The decor is arty with a lot of attention to detail and you keep seeing new things as you wander around.

Massaya is a fabulous winery in Faqra. We visited on a Sunday and enjoyed their scrumptious buffet. Although fog rolled in over the mountains, the scenery was still great. The winery tour was interesting and a great prelude to the buffet. There are board games available as well as foosball so be prepared to stay a while! It is interesting to note many of the chairs and tables are repurposed barrels and the bar is an example of excellent craftsmanship!

Not really knowing what to expect we pulled up the Massaya met but beautiful dogs and a stunning view. As we entered Karen introduced herself and let us know what our options were. We opted for the tour and 5 wines. I don't eat cheese so they gave me a cold cuts selection at no extra cost. The tour was excellent and so was the food but the wine was beautiful. Particularly with the view. Would certainly go back. And definitely recommend people go and visit

Well worthwhile & worthy of your time. The hostess was very knowledgeable, conversant in English & French and was a perfectly well informed guide. Their wine cellar was reminiscent of those in France, stone placed in an arc that shaped a cave which kept the temperatures just right for proper ageing of their barreled wine. They also have a very nice restaurant, bar & & shop where you can purchase the wines you've tasted. Certainly a lot closer than Kefraya or Kasara but obviously not as well known, it is still worth a visit for wine tasting & lunch.

This is a beautiful space to enjoy a lovely Sunday. The wine is the best in Lebanon, and perhaps anywhere in the world. The buffet changes every time and never disappoints. The staff are incredibly accommodating, especially the owner with his great hat and cigar. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the region. A great price for a great day.

We had a wine tasting tour booked at Massaya and loved it from the moment we walked in. Edwin was knowledgable, cheerful and wonderfully charismatic. The wine exceeded our expectations, so much so that we each went home with as much as possible! The food in the restaurant afterwards was delicious. A true highlight from our trip to Lebanon.

Went to Chateay Massaya (Faqra not Bekaa) during a Ski trip to Faraya. We stumbled across the Chateau while going around the area looking for an Apres Ski activity. It was the best find we could have hoped for. We were welcomed immediately by the manager who was very hospitable and took us immediately on a tour of the Chateau and its very interesting history. The location in Faqra is very small as most of the cultivation and bottling takes place in their original location in Bekaa valley but it was still enchanting and interesting. Even my two 15 and 9 year old boys enjoyed it. We then had a buffet lunch which was exceptional. The food was superb and some of the best I had in Lebanon (And I have had hundreds of good meals in Lebanon). The wine of course keeps coming all throughout lunch (White red and rose). The desserts buffet was even more sinful than the food including a delicious Lime pie and a dark chocolate cakes among others, The day was finally capped by a complimentary sampling of the Chateau's gold reserve wine (Which is not usually served with lunch) offered by the manager. Around the restaurant area there were plenty of artifacts and board games that kept us as well as the kids busy for hours. We left three hours later having enjoyed every single moment we spent there. Will be back again and again.
