A great day trying to find Santa with success!
Very organised. Lovely volunteers. A n enjoyable experience and we even got mince pies and mulled wine for the grown ups! Santa was lovely speaking to each of the children in turn. Look forward to returning in the summer to pan for gold!

We paid £9 to enter the museum that was basically one room with various tools and rock samples. We were informed the train would take a 25 minute journey to the quarry but in all fairness it was a 5-7 minute ride. A stop for 10-15 minutes at the end of the line with no real significance to the location and a similar return journey. I do not consider this as a good return for the £18 we paid as a couple.

Such brilliant friendly staff, we all enjoyed the train ride and museum. Not sure who enjoyed the panning more the 5 adults or the 3 children 🤣

We really enjoyed the working weekend, good to see people keen on putting life back into some of the really old machines so we could experience the smells, noise strength of the machines.

Came here with my partner and son as we were staying in Kendal for a bank holiday break and wanted to find things to do that would appeal to a 9 year old. The Days out with the kids (DOWTK) website which is great for ideas out had this place listed as a quarry and mining museum and showed there was a real steam train that takes you to see alsorts and takes about 25 minutes. It also said that there is an underground coal mine you can visit. My son is going to be learning about these in school in September so thought it would be a great place to visit. The roads leading up to the place (not actual roads as such, more of a private land style path road) really needed some form of attention as they are terrible and nearly damaged the car. The prices then, I asked if they do the disabled / carer concession which they said not so it was quite expensive for what you actually get. It cost £27 for 2 adults and 1 child then £4 for the panning. The panning consists of getting a little shallow bowl where you scoop the stones out of a small stream and see if you can find any of the small gemstone chips. You are given a small plastic container to put them in. The inside museum is quite small. To get to the quarry there is a steep 'path' up the hill. It is extremely muddy and very easy to fall so you have to be very careful. When we came there was a large amount of the 'path' that was waterlogged and extremely muddy, basically the path really is just largely where the grass has worn away and can be difficult to walk on. I use a crutch for a walking aid and found it very difficult to get up. I'm not sure those in wheelchairs would fair well on this unfortunately. The car park and tarmac areas near the museum are very uneven and lots of holes so you really have to be careful. The steam train was nice but doesn't last 25 minutes like the website says, the train goes so far then stops. You get out and the driver talks to you about how steam trains work. He then gets the train to the other side of the carriage and attaches it to take you back to where you came from. It was an enjoyable outing, doesn't last very long. I'd say the whole thing took us about 1 and a half to 2 hours maximum. Parking is free. I didn't see anywhere to get a drink or anything. The underground section that was mentioned online and the place still advertised inside the building as I noticed a couple of signs about it no longer is accessible. Apparently due to it being closed for a while during Covid, it became in a state of disrepair and as a result now apparently would cost too much to put right. It seems despite their being less at the museum to see, the price doesn't reflect this though. I guess it is worth a visit if you like this kind of thing but it's definitely something that once you have done it, you have done it.

We visited here whilst on holiday on a “cloudy and cool” day. We were surprised and thrilled to find out that our admission price (which was very reasonable) also included a short ride on a miniature steam train. We also had a very informative talk (but not too long so that young children did not get bored) about the quarry. The scenery around this area is stunning.
The exhibits and displays are a little tired and dated but extremely informative. It’s all “looking at and reading”. There are no “hands on” exhibits.
There’s a very reasonably priced shop with souvenirs, gifts and ice cream. The car park is large and adequate. The toilets are “rustic” but clean. There isn’t a cafe but plenty of places to sit (outside) and eat a picnic.

Well worth a visit for adults and children alike. Informative little museum - good on geology as well as the history of the site. Great little narrow gauge railway taking s short trip around the quarries, past the "skeletons" of many old machines. Panning in the little stream brings up lots of lovely crystals for the kids. Nice little gift shop with hot/cold drinks and cakes available but no cafe...yet. Staff/volunteers all very friendly and informative. Excellent value for money.

Really lovely day out, the team working at the quarry were lovely to us and our young daughter, the museum is very interesting and has obviously had a lot of time and care taken over it. We loved our ride on the steam train to the quarry and we loved panning for gem stones too! A really lovely family day out enjoyed by all three generations of our family, thank you for a lovely day.

As an industrial heritage enthusiast &steam train lover we were looking forward to our visit…but we were sadly very disappointed !

The admission price is a rip-off given what the site has to offer, as is charging kids an extra £4each to pan for imaginary gems/gold.

We were told it was only one train ride permitted - Note website says “unlimited rides” !

The museum is bursting with rock samples etc & information labels it will take you about 6hrs to read & digest it all…information overload to the point of boredom. Though one cannot fault its comprehensive coverage. Result is a quick walk through and vague scanning for me…for my children it was all done in 10mins.

Overall the whole site is a sprawling mess of junk, abandoned caravans, rusting heaps of stuff scattered about, etc…etc. And the toilets and ‘refreshments’ fall well short of expectations given the entry cost.

It is exceptionally poor value for money, is uninspiring & offers little education …..for a ‘family day out’ !

A beautiful location. A steam ride and panning for gems.
My son loved the panning and the train ride and looking around the old machines.
Our family really like machines so it was just our cup of tea.
I think there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The talk in the quary is lovely to discover the history.
The staff are friendly and helpful and it’s a lovely atmosphere. Very educational and you could spend hrs reading all about the rocks.
We spend around 2 hrs here. The cost is brilliant as it includes the train ride.
